Inexpensive Jewelry On Conquest

On the Conquest (as well as other ships) Carnival sells gold and silver by the inch. An inch (depending on the thickness of the links) cost $1 to $4. The $4/inch chains have very large heavy links. I did not buy any but after returning and doing a little research, this turns out to be a pretty good deal. A 24 inch gold chain on sale locally with same link size and weight would cost 5 to 6 times what it cost on the Conquest. I now wish I would have bought some. Also, gem stones (topaz etc..) were only $10.00 per carat.
This also seems to have been a prettty good deal. If anyone knows if I'm missing something, let me know. If the jewelry is that cheap, I could almost pay for my cruise with the savings.

I bought gold by the inch, and let me tell you, it is not solid gold. I figured something was up with the prices as cheap as they were. I bought gold by the inch to make an anklet. I wore it all the time and eventually the gold wore off. Ended up I had purchesed gold plating over sterling silver. I suppose if I hadn't worn it all the time, it would still look like gold, but for such a cheap price, it wasn't so bad.

YEP! Buyer BEWARE!! The Gold is indeed plated, not solid! The Silver is the better buy!

My experience has been that the best buys are on shore if you shop around. Also I believe that the ships track all of your purchases for IRS purposes,it is not like it used to be were you could make jewelery buys on board and not have to claim them on return to the states.

Sodey, what you missed is what hundreds of buyers also miss. This is gold electoplate over silver! Thus not real gold. Like the silver that is sold in Mexico by vendors wearing long sleeve shirts in 80 degree heat and towels over their arm - not real silver!

The loose gems are real however and IMHO a decent buy. If you are on a Southern Caribbean cruise, buy the gems before you get to St. Martin. At SM go to Kays and they will set them to your liking in an hour. I have earings, ring, pendents, all which get many complements due to unusual settings. My amethyst is a slide with a diamond in a large "teardrop" style.
Bon Voyage

There are gemstones available in Cozumel starting at $5 a carat. Compare that to the $10 a carat on the ship, plus the size of the ship's stones. (very large) I purchased a beautiful oval blue topaz in Coz for $16 (just over three carats) Some of the stones on the ship had to be 10 carats or larger. I also tried on an 11 carat diamond solitaire worth $50,000 in Coz. Too large for me, but nice to have on my finger :) Happy jewelry shopping - I love my gems!!!
