We will be cruising on 9/11/2004 on Century. My question is informal nights. Would a dress shirt & tie be ok for my husband. He does on have a sport jacket & does not want to buy one.
Getting excited.

Yes, a dress shirt and tie should be OK. Ship's dining rooms tend to be a bit on the cool side, so you might want to reconsider the jacket from a comfort standpoint. It would also give him the option of wearing the sport jacket over a polo shirt without the tie.

My husband likes to wear solid color silk sportshirts (not shiny silk--matte finish) under a sports jacket and no tie for informal nights. He feels comfortable and looks great.

I, too, didn't know whether or not to take a sport jacket for informal nights. At the last minue, I packed one along with a black suit which I used with a tux shirt for formal nights. I was really glad I took the jacket as Celebrity tended to be a lot dressier than Princess. Also, the dining room is quite chilly so that helped. I wore the sport jacket with a dress shirt and no tie.

We just returned from a cruise on the Century. After the first informal night, my SO ditched the jacket and tie because he was overdressed in comparison to what the majority of the men were wearing. He ended up donning a dress shirt and slacks for the informal nights and that truly was what most of the passengers were wearing. We had the late seating, so perhaps there's a difference in what's worn at the main seating.

We found that people were not nearly as dressed up as we expected. The formal nights were really the only nights we saw people truly dressed as suggested by the ship. We saw some men in tuxedos, but they tended to be older passengers. For the most part, the men wore dark suits for formal nights.

We learned a great lesson in packing for any future cruises as most of what my SO intended to wear for informal nights returned home unworn.

As for the temperature in the dining room, it was cool and pleasant. I never heard a man complain that it was too cold. Some women, including yours truly, found that a shawl or dressy poncho sufficed and kept us quite comfortable.

We also just returned from a cruise with Celebrity; ours on the Constellation. The majority of men in the main seating on informal nights wore jackets and dress shirts, some with ties and some not. We found the ship to be more formal than the Coral Princess, our previous cruise.

On formal nights, there seemed to be more tuxedos [or black suits with bow tie and cummerband, disguised as tuxedos] than just suits. The age difference did not seem to factor into this equation.

Interesting.....

Has anyone been on the Infinity on the Alaska run this year?

I am on the trip with my new wife (honeymoon trip!) and want to be sure I will be ok not wearing shirt and tie on informal nights. Else wjhere in the message board i have heard of cruisers being refused entrance to the show on informal evenings as they are not wearing a jacket/tie.

I will be taking a smart dark suit and a couple of shirts and ties for the formal evenings.

Our main problem ids that straight from the cruise we are going to Las Vegas for 6 nights. As you can imagine w eare already having to pack one wardrobe to deal with 'chilly' Alaska and one to deal with rather warmer Las Vegas. The last ting i want to do is start packing shirts/ties/second suit that will not be used.

Travellers on the Infinity to Alaska this year, over to you.......

Many thanks

We took the Infinity to Alaska in 2002 and found the cruise to be the least formal of our Celebrity cruises. While there were still a preponderance of sports coats and suits on informal nights, there were a lot of shirts/ties or shirts/sweaters to be seen also. I will have to say that while I didn't see anyone turned away from the dining room or show, I also didn't see any shorts and T-shirts there either.
Have fun, and pray for sun!

Just back from Constellation--everyone wore a jacket on informal night & dress shirt--the tie was yes or no. Suggest wearing the suit jacket with a grey or beige slack--mix & match...but I think he will want the jacket. Ours was an 11 night trip so my husb made it woth one suit & one jacket, various slacks & shirts. They had one less informal night than expected. Casual nights were also fairly dressy-ish except first & last night when everyting is very casual!
