I recently booked a traditional, old fashioned, looking out on the ocean balcony for the Oasis of the Seas for NEXT July (2010)...Funny part is that the ones overlooking Central Park were offered at a HIGHER fare. For my wife, it's a no-brainer...she doesn't want to be seen on her balcony...she wants solitude...She wants to get a tan, read a book, etc. sitting on a chair out in the sun...
For me, I like the extra space...and to get some fresh air without leaving the cabin...
So, I am thinking about a 2-foot deep "balcony" in one of these smallish cabins...
Isn't it little more than a "window that opens"...You can't exactly sit out there...You don't get a lot of extra square footage...There is no fresh air...You can't get a drink or eat your room service food out there...
You can open the "door" and walk 24 inches closer...to the Ben and Jerry's...
So, here;s the hook...Right now, these cabins are a great bargain...My 24 year old daughter and her friend booked one on the Freedom of the Seas back in September...Why? An inside cabin on a lower deck was $589 pp and a "promenade view" was only $609...So, for $20 more pp for the week, they got a window of some sorts on a more convenient deck and didn't have to feel like they were in a closet in "Steerage"...
BUT, when Royal Caribbean changes out the windows, don't you think it's more "marketing" than anything else? That, suddenly, they now bill them as "Promenade Balcony" cabins and...on a sailing where they used to go for that $609 pp, they're now $829?...Smart marketing by RCCL, but bad for the customer looking for a bargain...
