What are the odds for a first time Carnival cruiser with 2 rooms booked as inside guarantee to get upgraded?
Thanks!

We just got back from the Destiny. We booked an inside guarantee for the first time. The Carnival guy told our TA that it looked "very good" for a good upgrade. I was disappointed to find that we had been upgraded one floor, still an inside, about mid-ship. I have heard stories about great upgrades but it just didn't happen for us. My advice is not to count on anything better than what you booked. Enjoy your cruise! Shannon

Your odds are just as good as the next person, luck of the draw.
But upgrades are usually in the norm of inside to inside, outside
to outside, rare occasion inside to outside and kiss off inside to
balcony as outside to balcony are rare. Book what you will be happy
with and appreciate anything more and you will be a happy cruiser.
Also an aggressive TA helps.......

could get it. If you don't ask at the check in counter if the ship is full and if not ask for an upgrade. It will sometimes get you one.

The big "upgrades that everybody makes a fuss about are inside to a suite. The chances are probably like 1 in 100,000. Inside to a balcony maybe 1 in 10,000. Inside to outside 1 in 5,000. If the sailing is a high demand date and the ship is full then its 0 in 0.

Guessing that 4,999 out of 5,000 "upgrades" are from lowest deck to a higher deck, same cabin type. And when you get moved up a deck or two, it will be to the lowest demand cabins on the new deck. All the way forward or all the way aft or right by an elevator. To me those are all perfectly good cabins but they sell slowest because people have conceptions against them.

The numbers above are just guesses. Actual personal results are 40 cruises, 3 "upgrades"
2 of those of the same cabin, higher deck type "upgrades" [one all the way forward and one right by the elevator] and one "real" upgrade, inside to outside cabin. [right by the elevator]

Be very happy with the cabin type you booked, if you're not ready to cruise in that type cabin, you shouldn't have booked it. If you booked a guarantee with the hope for the best but the expectations of the worst and will be happy with whatever you get. fine, that's the only way to look at it.

I beg to differ with you. I have sailed 3 times and have been upgraded 2 out of the 3. Once inside to inside 2 decks ups and once inside to outside. I'm guessing if u have cruised 40 times and only have been upgraded twice then you my friend should not even bother playing the lottery because luck u don't have :)

The upgrade business drives me batty. [more so than normal battiness] But I've got lots of luck, once won $22000.00 playing black jack on Cunard and have won over $1000. on each of the last two cruises. [we won't talk about four cruises back]
But nothing when it comes to upgrades. I should change my board name to UpgradeCynic. Actually its 3 out of 10 because we've booked specific cabins on at least 30 of the cruises. We love aft balconies.
Still I consider it only one upgrade, the inside to outside one. The other two, moving up a deck or two in the same cabin, I don't consider to be an upgrade. The deck means nothing to me and higher decks have inflated prices due to carryover from long ago when there was a huge difference between the higher and lower decks. Then the low decks were for 2nd or 3rd class pax and they weren't allowed on the highest decks ever.
On todays ships there is NO difference between the decks tho the cruiselines want you to think there is, allowing them to charge more money for the same thing.

We have been upgraded on many of our cruises, with carnival and other lines. However, the upgrade is generally dependent on how far in advance we booked and the time of the trip. Being a previous cruser and working with an agency with some clout doesn';t hurt. A holiday cruise which is generally pretty heavily sold out would yeild little or insignificant upgrade. A cruise in a slower season (ie thanks to x-mas or early Jan) generally can give a better upgrade. I have a cruise book for minimum inside on NCL for 1/18, purchased in July upgraded to partly obstructed porthole. I purchased a 8I GTY 6 weeks out for 11/01 and was upgraded to cat 11 on Carnival. I purchased an Alaska inside GTY in Mar 03 and was upgraded several decks but still an inside on Celebrity. Fairy dust.

Well 3 out of 10 is a heck of a lot better than 2 out of 40 which u previously said. Why didn't u just say that to begin with. Nothing like being an optimist eh? Your previous post stated inside to outside upgrade is 1 out of 10,000 I guess I was the one out of 10,000.......I don't think so!! When you book a specific cabin (like u did 30 times) that is your cabin and you will not be upgraded (you should know this having been on 40 cruises) so your stats are way off. Nothing wrong with a little hope when cruising and book a Guaranty...just make sure you are ok with what you pay for.
