Two years ago we took the princess cruise to Alaska. In Skagway we decided to rent a car which cost us $69 for the whole day. We checked into the cost of 4 of us to take the train adventure(white rail pass) and it would have cost us $320. The car route basically followed the same area the train was on. You can't get lost, not a lot of roads in Alaska. It was the smartest thing we did, ended up at Emerald lake. Stopped at all the fun places along the way, something you can't do on the train. I rented a car over the internet in Skagway, get off the ship and its walking distance away. Very nice people at the car rental, can tell you anything you want to know and how to get any place you want to be.
