Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I went around with the insurance company today. First you have to go through the machine that answers the phone. Then you get someone who tells you they can't help you and transfer you to someone else, all the while music blares in your ear. Then you get someone who actually listens to your problem but says I can't help you let me transfer you more music. Finally I get a person in pharmacy assistance who can help me and does.

When she heard they had yanked the prescription from my local specialty pharmacy insisting that it be sent to their pharmacy in Florida on the day it was to be refilled, she apologized and attempted to authorize one more refill. She also offered to assist me in setting up an account with the insurance company's pharmacy. OMG someone is trying to help me. She tells me she is going to call my pharmacy and authorize the refill and asks me to hold. It was too late, because the prescription had already been electronically transferred at their demand to the other pharmacy. She comes back and asks me, Maam are you totally out of your prescription? I said no I will be if I don't get it by Friday. She asks permission to put me on hold and and tells me she is on the phone with their pharmacy now.....More music...... Then, 30 minutes pass during which time she comes back several times to tell me she is trying to get this resolved quickly, that generally it takes 3-5 days........more music........

Finally 45 minutes after I reached this particular very helpful person she comes back to tell me they found my prescription but they can't refill it until tomorrow, get this,,,,,, because their computers are locked on new prescriptions for 48 hours. OMG what is that? Now I am directed to call the pharmacy tomorrow to follow up. I am thrilled that I will have my prescription by the weekend but totally fed up that an insurance company treats people like this. They never forget to take my monthly payment! I wasn't buying socks online at Target, I am trying to get a vital prescription which seems to be in never never land for 48 hours. I couldn't be upset with this representative though, she was truly very helpful and got me all registered at the new pharmacy.

OK now I am 50 percent there, I hope, I know they are going to fill my prescription and next day UPS it from Florida. Makes no sense to me when there is a pharmacy 20 miles away that was doing just fine in getting me my prescription. So now I have to call the pharmacy because the co-pay is so huge on this drug that it makes it pretty much unaffordable without another co-insurance. So the drug company has a program where they pay most of your co-pay. My former pharmacy is the one that got me set up and told me about this program on my first month on this drug.

Yesterday when I called this new pharmacy the moron who answered the phone had no clue about this co-insurance by the drug company. So now my worry is they won't accept this co-insurance and I'm going to have a phenominal co-pay when I call tomorrow. So, I was going to have them call and talk to an insurance rep at the drug company trying to get this set up ahead of time rather than run into a problem tomorrow.

Today I lucked out. The person who answered the phone at the new pharmacy told me they do accept this co-insurance and that they understand how to bill it. She told me she was going to call me but didn't have a phone number for me.....eeeeegggggaddddds so I give her two numbers at which to reach me. She told me my prescription had not popped out of the computer yet but promised she would watch it and call me tomorrow. OMG I actually got some help at the new pharmacy from someone who knew what they were talking about. So I reminded her about the temperature control on this medication and she told me not to worry they pack in dry ice for the long trip from Florida overnight to CO. This drug has to be maintained between 35 and 45 degrees F. So I worry that it will make it here still good. She assured me it would. Jeesssssshhhh my insurance company may be saving 20.00 a month but what they have put me through has been incredible.

The worst part is that my doctor told me that soon, the insurance will refuse to pay for the drugs at the current levels. He said the only reason doctors taper this drug down after 3 months is because the insurance company refusees to pay for them at the higher dose. It makes me furious that doctors are no longer treating patients, the insurance companies are.

Tomorrow I'll find out at what level they approve this drug. If they taper me, then I have to call the doctor and get them working on this for me to fight for what he really wants me to be taking!

I know I'm not alone, this is something that every single person with insurance goes through. It is insanity.

My former pharmacy did everything for me. They got the prescription, they called me and told me to call a 1-800 number and talk to the drug company insurance reps in order to reduce my co-pay. They even gave me the card for the co-insurance which they maintain on hand for new patients on this therapy. Within one hour I was all approved and my co-pay reduced by 3/4, and my prescription was filled and an appointment set for the pharmacist to teach me to inject myself. They were so helpful, each month they would call me and tell me it was time to refill I never had to call them. What a sin that we are at the mercy of the insurance companies for medical care.

I am going to have to be right on top of this other pharmacy I fear. Hopefully I have set the wheels in motion and finally this is all set. If you hear a scream from CO tomorrow you will know why.

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you, Being a nurse we are constantly told by insurance companies that something is not the right thing for the patient. Be it a medication, or surgery. The doctor is the one who has done the exam on the patient & has used other medical alternatives & has to fight to get the ok to do something that is the right thing to do for the patient. We see this all the time and it just drives me crazy. People that work at insurance companies a lot of the time just have a piece of paper that says if you have this then this is what is covered even though part of what you have is not even mentioned in their little piece of the world. Good luck with your continued supply of meds through the pharmacy that works best for you. Linda

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judy - Hope by the time you read this that you have this resolved. I have a similar medication that I can only get a one month supply of at a time and I have unusual dosing requirements. Every so often I will get a new pharmacist and wind up with the prescription being dispensed incorrectly and I have to suck it up for a month until my doctor writes the next one. I feel your pain and hope that this new pharmacy works out since it seems that you have to deal with them now.

I had the misfortune on this trip of getting pneumonia and having to get over $50 worth of prescriptions filled out here in Arizona. Luckily for me I do everything through Walgreen's and it was easy to get them filled as they had all my information on file.

So sorry that you have to go through all of this, Judy. It's getting so that the insurance companies are controlling too much!

Hope it all gets taken care of soon.

BostonsJ I feel your pain having gone through the same thing. My med has to be kept in ice packs too when overnighted. When DH insurance insisted we use the "specialty" pharmacy vs. our local pharmacy it turned into a nightmare and yes they have no problem billing your credit card for the copay even when you can't get the refill. I too have to take weekly injections and these meds suppress my immune system and missing a dose is not an option. Flare ups happen within 24 hours.

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Log Cabin it sounds as though you are on a similar drug to the one I take. I missed one dose because they tried to taper me and I flared immediately. It is insane they can do this to people.

If I hadn't tried to be proactive in November and if I hadn't made the calls to ask if I needed to change pharmacies I guess I would be less upset. But they changed the plan in January and it just riles me that on a specific day when I was to refill(same day every month) my pharmacy gets the call you can't refill this.

Hopefully this is resolved today.

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They changed my husband's plan during the middle of the year or should I say his insurance decided it wanted to "save money" on this prescription when mandating we switch to a mail order pharmacy and yes without notifying us. I only found out after going to my regular pharmacy that they were no longer allowed to fill that prescription and I had to call DH insurance carrier to find out "what the deal was".

Don't give up!:phone

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dh's part d insurance has quit paying for a phosphate binder that he has to take because he is on dialysis. There are 2 other drugs that are less expensive but they don't work for him. The new drug costs over $400.00 a month. I am going to get the dr. to appeal to the drug plan. I also didn't know that it wasn't going to be covered until I went to pick up his prescription last week.

He had started on the new drug in November and his phosphate levels went down within a month.

Insurance stinks but where would we be without it?

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judy,
I feel for you, I had a problem too with insurance & an injectable med. They made me get it through a mail order place in Fl. I paid the sme co-pay there as the corner drug store here. I don't know how much they think they save after paying the shipping & all. My problem was getting them to send me the right size needles.
Good luck & hope they get it straighten out for you.

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've been lucky so far and haven't had many issues with Rxs but getting appointment's with specialists drives me crazy...and I fear after my appointment today with my GP I am going to need to visit the orthopedic Dr and possibly physical therapy. Therapy is SO hard for me to schedule with how I work. This is going to be interesting.....

Re: Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well at least I am not alone! Today another 5 calls. The first call to the pharmacy was at 8am. I told them yesterday that I am two hours behind eastern. The call came in at 6:30am my time and was on my voice mail. Scary stuff. Anyway this is what I got. Well yes we have your prescription and everything is fine with it but now we have to have insurance review so it could take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to get that accomplished. Did you hear the roar? I asked for a supervisor and then I made it clear that should this medication not be shipped via UPS next day tomorrow morning whoever was responsible for this problem was going to have to answer to an insurance review board that I did not create this chaotic nerve wracking mess and someone needed to fix it. I demanded that they expedite the insurance review and that I expected a phone call before they closed at 5pm. Three phone calls inbetween.

No call before 5pm easter. Well guess what? Someone got out of work late tonight because at 2:50 my time which would be ten minutes before 5 eastern having not heard again I called them.

Oh yes we have this ready for shipment tomorrow. Now I go through the whole question and answer about address, shipping, do I need another sharps container or alchol wipes.......I'd answered those questions five times already. OK well is there anything else I can help you with? Well yes, can you tell me what prescription was approved. Pheeeew got that right. Would you like a card for payment? Oh yea I guess we need that. OMG I wanted to scream. This is not something you can do at work when you have so many other pressing issues but I had no choice.

I just can't understand this at all. It has been the most infuriating frustrating 3 days. Now I just have to cross my fingers and wait to see if it arrives.

Too late to edit. Killian was yapping in my ear for his supper and I hit post too soon!

I wish you all happier days when dealing with your prescription woes and insurance companies. I'm sorry you all understand exactly what I am going through. It just shows how bad things have gotten for all of us.
