Is a long gown too formal?

I am a newbie to cruising, so I am not sure if I will look silly wearing a long gown to formal night. Also, how early should we arrive to the port for embarkation (Jacksonville)? The information booklet says boarding will begin at 1:30, but does it help to get there sooner or later? Thank you in advance.

If you want to wear a long gown on formal night, go right ahead. Others will be wearing long gowns also. You will find all sorts of clothing on formal night from pants to long gowns. So, whatever you're comfortable in and want you picture taken in is all up to you.

I can't tell you about embarkation time in Jacksonville as I've never boarded there.

A long gown is fine but you will also see lots of coctail dresses and dressy pant suits. Do what your comfortable in an/or what you might have.

Usually embarkation will start as early as 11:30 or 12:00 but you will not be able to go to your cabin till 1:00 - 1:30. You will also run into heavier crowds at that time. After 2:30 things start to slow down in the embarkation lines. That said....I like to arrive early as I want to have all the time I can aboard ship ;)

Hi I agree long gowns are just fine. My daughter always takes a long gown for one formal night anf cocktail for the other.

You have my vote too.

Thank you all for responding. We just came back from our cruise and it was wonderful. I think I am an addict now! And to answer my own question, a long gown is definitely not too formal. I felt beautiful and my husband was thrilled to have our pictures taken while we were dressed to the nines. As for everyone else, they loved the gown too. We had at least 20 compliments, the best coming from the Maitre' D who told us "Now that is what formal night means! You look marvelous.:thumb"

Glad you had a nice time. Now you need to get busy and book the next cruise so you can dress up again!

Wear that long gown girl! I have worn long gowns and cocktail dresses. Anything goes! I plan to wear a long gown again in November. I love the formal look in the pictures. We sailed from Jacksonville last November. We arrived at 11:30 and were able to go to our cabin at 1:30. We enjoyed the lido deck while waiting. Embarkation was a breeze at Jacksonville compared to New Orleans. Have fun on the Celebration!
