I've been to Limon several times and felt very safe.  I usually travel alone but will hook up with other passengers and hire a cab or van for the day and the drivers are always very pleasant.  There is some beautiful scenery in Costa Rica and wonderful seafood restaurants for lunch outside of the town of Limon.

If you feel safer on a ships excursion, do so, but as a single female traveler, Costa Rica has never caused me a moment of concern.  There are some "stalls" on the pier where you can find great deals on leather goods and wooden salad bowls and tongs.

I believe I once heard Costa Rica is the only country in the world without an army - if that's true it says a lot about the people.

Bon Voyage!
