Is cruising in Oct a bad idea?

We just returned from our first cruise.....5 nights on the Zenith.....and we loved it! So much so, that we're looking into an 11 night Carribeancruise out of NJ on Celebrity Constellation. I'm wondering what the chances are of having a really rough voyage......anyoneone else out there who's done that particular cruise? Thanks for any input.......

Linda,

I have sailed out of NYC, though not out of Bayonne. And, I often do the Caribbean in the shoulder season in October and November when great rates exist.

Don't worry. With the exception of a hurricane (and October is in hurricane season), your voyage will be relatively smooth. And, in the rare event a hurricane is forecast into your path, the captain will rearrange your cruise itinereary "on the fly" to stay well out of its path.

You will be in the open Atlantic, of course, so there will likely be a little higher seas than you had on your Zenith trip in the Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico. But, Constellation is nearly twice as large as Zenith, and she is equipped with very modren stabilizers. These two factors will largely negate the effects of the sea. Once you get below Charleston, you'll be sailing in warmer, calmer seas and you'll have no roblems at all.

It's a very large fly, Cruizer! But, if you read more closely you'll see that it is the itinerary that is on the fly, not Constellation -- LOL. As you should have learned in school, Constellations are in the sky. Itineraries are on the fly. Bye, bye.

popsec.... Although Ted d is correct you greatly increase your odds with the month and where you are sailing.
Is it a bad idea ??..no but remember mother nature wins. If you are prepared for changes because of weather and willing to deal with rough water there is no negative at all. If you're not you"re planing the odds.

Our very first cruise was on Celebrity Zenith from NYC (now goes out of NJ) to Bermuda. It was Oct. 11, 2003. Our very first night out we hit tropical storm Marty. We did ok having grown up on the Chesapeake Bay, but sleeping wasn't easy. That was our only rough night.

I took CONSTELLATION out of Bayonne early last November. The first two days were chilly, but other than that, it was just like a Caribbean cruise that originates out of FLL or MIA or any of the other southern ports.

We are, of course, in a 'very active phase' of hurricane activity, according to NOAA. But as another poster noted, the captains on cruise ships quickly re-route ships around storms. You may miss a port or two, but you will still have a great time.
