There are NO non smoking cabins on any ship-- yes you can smoke in your cabin.

Thanks. I thought you could but when we booked our cruise last night with a Carnival vacation planner, he said that there is no smoking in the staterooms. They ask that you go out on deck. I thought he was wrong about that.

He was -- and I would have to ask him how many carnival cruises has he taken.

I know Disney is the only main stream crusilines that you can NOT smoke in the cabins.

But you won't find an ashtray in your cabin! You'll have to ask the steward for one. I always solve this problem by going to the dollar store and buying a few of the round plastic ashtrays and I put one on the balcony, one in the cabin and one in the bathroom. And I keep one in my beach bag too for the deck. You will be amazed at how few they have available. I think they figure if there are no ashtrays noone will smoke. I DETEST people who put cigs on the ground and stomp on them. If nothing else, get a cup and put some water in it and use that as an ashtray. I know, smelly and yukky looking and I know I am going to get a lot of flak, but smokers DO have rights too.

Karry, you are the first person I've heard of, besides myself, who takes their own ashtray. I take the same type small plastic ashtray for my cabin. (One really good thing is that those type ashtrays have a better place to secure the cigarette.) The glass ashtrays the ship furnishes, the cigarettes can sorta roll off, y'know? I always take my own - along with a small can of room deodorizer - so the lingering smoke odor doesn't suffocate the steward when he comes into the cabin. LOL

Just saw the remark abt the smoke bothering the steward on at least one cruise as non smokers I noticed the smell of smoke in our cabin when we returned after the steward had made up the room.

I bring air freshener with me also. A good trick if you need a quick "odor eater" for a small area: light a match and then blow it out and let the smoke swirl in the air.

If you are in your cabin and smell smoke-- leave the room steward a note and by the time you come back after dinner it should be gone.
I take post its and leave it on the mirror for jobs i want him to do for us.

We have never had any problem with a smoke smell in our cabin, even when our next door neighbors were heavy smokers.

I do find it interesting that when Carnival began listing their "designated smoking areas" (about the same time they made the Paradise a smoking ship) in their Capers....you will not find "cabins" listed as a designated smoking area.

Probably a move to protect themselves against a lawsuit in case a smoker causes a fire their cabin; kinda like the no ironing in your cabin thing!

Fascinating. I am a smoker, never even gave WHERE I would smoke a thought. We are debating a balcony room on the valor in December. I figure if we have a balcony, I could smoke there. Then again, I would hate to disturb anyone around me by smoking. ... everyone paid good money to be on the ship afterall.

So, any thoughts on smoking do's a don'ts?

Thanks :)

AreWeThereYet - from a non-smoker to a smoker, I thank you for your consideration. Any designated area on the ship should not be a problem for a smoker to light up. As for the balcony thing, I would again just use good judgment and common sense. If you are out there all by your lonesome, fire up. If you know there are others around you, then it is a judgment call...use your good judgment.

My only stake in this "discussion" (since I am not allergic) is that I end up with throat/bron ulcers and ear infection from prolong exposure. After one sailing on the Holiday, it lasted for several weeks. (We had a really smoky crowd in Karaoke - which is one of the main reasons I cruise.) But since Carnival implemented the designated smoking areas, I stick with larger ships and have not had a problem. I don't gamble, so avoiding the casino is no problem and the larger ships have karaoke in the smaller (but non-smoking) theather. So it has worked out well.

Sadly the other reason is just personal. I have buried one sister, one BIL and SIL and a grandmother because of cigs and what I witnessed them enduring before their death, I would not wish on my worst enemy (much less myself).

On the flip side, I love to smell a good pipe or cigar. My Dad smoked a pipe all his life and never had a problem with cancer.

LHP, thank you for your advice! I completely understand where you are comming from (I am sorry to hear about your family members). I do smoke, wish I'd never started (one of the only things I regret in life actually). I certainly don't want to aggrevate anyone around me. I never smoke when there are kids around, or if I'm in tight quarters where people may be bothered. Never having cruised before, I am not sure what to expect.

It is good to know that there are designated smoking areas, I will keep that in mind. :)
