Hi everyone,
We are going on an Alaskan cruise on the Island Princess in July 2009. We start in Anchorage & end in Vancouver.
Any suggestions or comments from anyone who has done this cruise ship would be great.

Hi srbeachbum:

We were on the Island Princess two years ago to Alaska and liked it so much we are going back to Alaska on the Island Princess again this year.

It is a fantastic cruise and IMHO, after trying several cruise lines, Princess is by far the best cruise line for cruising to Alaska.
Just a few tips are to sit on the right hand side of the bus or train as you head down to Whittier from Anchorage. The view is just outstanding on the right side as you head to Whittier from Anchorage. For some of the ride to Whittier there will be the side of a mountain on your left hand side.

In Skagway I recommend renting a car and driving up to at least Emerald Lake. It is about a two+ hour drive one way, not counting stops to take pictures, which you will want to do often.

The ship itself was in great shape when we sailed her two years ago and Princess is known for maintaining their fleet and keeping ships in top shape.

I work with sveral folks who have taken this cruise along with a trusted neighbor. All they do is rave about it. Well, we believed them and we are booked on the Island Princess for the NB Vancouver to Whittier on 22 June 2009 plus the 5 day land tour. I know we can't wait hope you are as excited. Enjoy your cruise.

Cheers, Kenn

Make sure you plan to get up early the next morning after you depart Whittier. If you don't, you will miss College Fiord and the best glaciers on the trip. Princess sails this area very early in the morning (like 6:00AM) and you will be very sorry if you miss it. We have sailed Alaska several times and did a back-to-back on the Island last year. It is a very nice ship. Have a great trip!!!!!

If you can afford the Taku Lodge tour in Juneau it is the best. We use to live in Seattle and Taku lodge has the best Salmon we have ever eaten and the Bear came out at the Lodge while we ate. Great Cruise.

Howdy from Texas! We're also on the 7/27 Southbound on the Island. Will be our 3rd time for Voyage of the Glaciers. Obviously, we enjoy it so much we just keep repeating! Hints/Highlights:

--That's a good suggestion to sit on right side of train, although the windows are so large, the visibility is good from either side. Last time we were on left side and would have missed the Dall sheep on the mountainside if we'd not been able to look straight up out the windows!

--If you arrive in Whittier in time (train arrives at 12:20), HIGHLY recommend the Major Marine glacier/sightseeing cruise into Blackstone Bay. The bay is rimmed with breathtaking waterfalls and a number of glaciers--two of which are very active! Departs at 1:15 and returns at 6:30. You'll have time to board the ship and check in before heading over to the Major Marine dock.

--There is plenty to do in the ports. I'd suggest reading the message boards for individual reviews. One thing we ALWAYS do is the whale watching cruise in Juneau (Auke Bay)--that's an absolute MUST!

--If you're interested in whale watching, recommend buying one of the books on cruising the Inside Passage that notes the best areas to watch for whales along your route. Some of the areas we always see whales: entering/leaving Glacier Bay, all around Juneau (approaching via Lynn Canal very early a.m. and for several hours after leaving Juneau while cruising Stephens Passage) and around Johnstone Strait (mainly Orcas) in B.C.

--Good binoculars are essential--take them with you everywhere! Go prepared for warm, cold, dry and wet weather!

Hope you folks enjoy it as much as we do!
