I just received an email from Carnival today stating that our 4 day cruise to Cozuemel will be changed to Calica/Play Del Carmen (on Elation out of Galveston December 22, 05) This is our family christmas gift (5 kids, & mother as well as my husband and i). They have offered that we can cancel without penalty but they must know by MONDAY 14TH..

Any input on this port would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sophie :)

Dear Sophie, You need to ask yourself if you are cruising to get to a specific destination, or for the experience of the ship itself. We have 6 kids, and we took them all on the Holiday for a 4-day cruise several years ago. The experience of having us all together, dining, shows, games, lounging, chasing each other all over the ship, trying new things, and sharing it together was sufficient that we might not have noticed if they skipped the port visit altogether. We had FUN on the ship. We are taking all of them again (along with 10 of our friends) in May. I don't think the port change would make that much difference to me. You can do snorkeling, beach or shopping at Calica, just like Cozumel. It may be a less desirable port, but I would encourage you to make it a great time together, no matter where the ship stops.

Besides, when would you be able to re-book? Next Christmas? A few years down the road?

Go for it, Baby!

By the way, January will be our second time on the Elation. It is our FAVORITE ship so far. I hope the Conquest does her best in May to outshine the Elation.

You will have to travel by bus or taxi from Calica to get to anything. The dock is literally a rock quarry, and there is nothing there. Look at the Carnival website for excursions. I would recommend Tulum, which is Mayan ruins on a cliff overlooking the Gulf waters. It is awe-inspiring!
