I'm new at cruising and have never snorkeled. Is it hard to do? We are thinking
about booking with Fury Catamarans in Cozumel. I really want to try this but am
wondering if I can do it. Your input would be appreciated so much.
Thanks,
Diane

No it's not hard to snorkel, the guide will give you directions on how to do it, and you will have a life jacket on..so not to worry. It's really a lot of fun.

Fury sounds very good to me also. My brother and his wife took Fury and said it was the highlight of their entire cruise.

Is this the $55 trip which includes a visit to the beach? If so, we did this and it was quite fun and very convenient. There are probably better reefs to snorkel at than the one we went to. We visited one reef for snorkeling, then took a boat ride for about 20 minutes to the beach. Drinks (soft drinks, margaritas, and Cervesa beer) were served onboard after snorkeling and at the beach at no additional charge; food was available at the beach for another $8. There were around 60 people on the boat and a lot of drinking (party atmosphere).

We stayed at the beach for almost 2 hours. There were kayaks available, covered tables, foam mats for on the beach or in the water, and volleyball. Horseback riding was available at an additional charge. The beach area was shared with people on another boat. The crew served shots of tequila with 7-up to volunteers on the trip back from the beach

There was a person taking pictures during the trip and selling them at the end; I don’t remember the asking price but it seemed high. I was going to offer $6 for a picture because I only brought $6 with me but it began to rain heavily and I didn’t hang around to make an offer.

If we cruise to Cozumel again, we will probably take a cab to Dzul Ha or some other beach and snorkel on our own for less money. I’ve heard the reef is better and we can snorkel more.

I really loved going on the Fury. Our cruise was during Hurricane Michelle so the waters were a little bit rough. We got on the Fury and they took us only to one snorkle site because of the rough seas and the current at the other location. We got to snorkle there a bit longer than usual. It was very easy to get on and off the fury for snorkling. There is a stairway. Someone we were with was a bit older and it was very easy for them. The equiptment was great they had. Then we cruised for about 45 minutes or so and the drinks started to flow!!! We arrived at the beach and stayed there for about 2 hours.

The beach was beautiful!!! They had volley ball, beach mats, kayaks. There was a little resturant and a bar. There was also some places to buy some stuff - not much selection but very pretty things. When we got back on the fury the real party began!! All I remember is doing the conga line and the crew pouring alcohol in my mouth!!! Oh yea - we did get flashed by a passing speed boat! It was a blast!!! This is when they sold the pictures from the snorkling. Great pictures. Not too expensive. Don't remember the exact price - it was 2 years ago and I was slightly drunk :)

We did get back in time to do a little shopping in Cozumel. I was on RCCL - Voyager of the Seas and the Fury was docked no more that 50 feet from our ship. It was awesome to compare the sizes. Don't get me wrong - the Fury was a large catamran but next to the Voyager it looked like a little sail boat you would play with in your bath tub.

I am going on a cruise next October and we are stopping in Key West. I went on the Fury web site and they have a boat there for snorkling. I will be going back on the Fury!!!

Here is the Fury web site:

Please, please, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Susan, I have looked at the website. The Florida tour sounds even better than the Cozumel. Looks like they offer a little more there. I am SO excited about the Fury and have my fingers crossed that the water will be calm. Thanks for the info. Diane

Diane,

First, let me say most people LOVE to snorkle. However, there are some things you may want to consider. My wife tried it for the first time on our honeymoon 25 years ago. It requires that you breathe through your mouth, not your nose, and this was something that she could not (and never has) gotten used to. Also, if you're going on a snorkling expedition, you should realize that you will be putting the mouthpiece in your mouth that was probably the day before in someone else's mouth (and has, hopefully, been cleaned to some degree). If this unnerves/bothers you may want to buy yourself some snorkling gear (mask, snorkel, and maybe fins) ahead of time (and maybe try them out in a less stressful environment to see if you like snorkling)?

You should be able to find a good snorkle at a good sporting goods store or a dive shop. Be advised, some of the snorkles have a "valve" at the top that prevents water from coming down the snorkle tube and into your mouth. This may be advantageous to a first timer. If you do go ahead and buy your own gear, find a pool near to your home and try it out. This could be a community pool, YWCA, or hey, ask a local hotel with an indoor pool if you could try snorkling there for an hour or so?

If you can get used to snorkling ahead of time, and comfortable with breathing through your mouth, you'll be a lot more comfortable on your excursion and know you won't be spending all your time trying to learn to snorkle, but actually doing it and enjoying the fish, coral, etc. Also, please remember NOT to touch or stand on the coral as this is the ecosystem for many creatures and just touching the coral destroys it. Remember, take nothing but memories and leave nothing but bubbles!!

Enjoy!!!
