JillB's Brother Duncan Update

ShipMaven

Forever Remembered
I sent a note to Jill to inquire about her brother, Duncan. Here is her reply this evening:

Duncan is fighting and keeping positive. This is week 2 of his chemo and radiation treatments. The chemo made him very sick until the oncologist prescribed some heavy duty anti-nausea pills. To Duncan, the worst part is he has lost the use of his left arm, and his left leg is weak due to the position of the tumour. He gets very frustrated at not being able to do normal tasks; aside from the arm and leg issues, he isn't in any pain, and finds it hard to accept that he has a life threatening condition.
He claims he is going to make medical history by surviving longer than expected. Thank you for asking after him.

The wedding plans are going well; the big day is this coming Sunday.

I forgot to mention that he had good blood results last Friday; platelets good, white cells good. We are all very pleased about this.

She hasn't been on the Board for awhile, but I'll forward any responses to her if I see that she hasn't logged on.

Thank you for the update. I love his attitude! Prayers continue, of course.

Regarding the loss of use of his left arm -- our family has some experience there. There are many adaptive devices for doing everyday tasks one-handed. For example, a pizza wheel can be used to cut meat. There must be occupational therapists at the hospital that can provide other ideas specific to his situation.

Hugs to all.

Thank you for the info. I nevermet Jill's brother but had the pleasure of meeting Jill, husband and mother on the alaskan Duck cruise. They are a very nice family. Joe & I prayers go out to all of them.

Glad to hear he isn't in pain. And it is great news that he has those great blood reports. Our oncologist prescribed heavy duty meds for Mike to take before each chemo session & for a few days after treatment & he really had no problems with nausea, etc--a little tired but no physical illness so I hope as Duncan's treatments continue that his dr can keep the nausea at bay BEFORE it happens. As for the arm & leg, I am sure the therapists will be able to help with that & help him learn to adapt. It may take some adjustment but you can live with a bad arm or leg. The key word here is LIVE. Positive thoughts that the treatments will help.

Thank you Mary Ann for posting the update, and thanks everyone for your positive thoughts and prayers; I am sure they are helping.

Duncan has always been healthy and active, racing motorbikes for years, fixing vehicles, doing all the handyman jobs around the house...............

Lisa63 and KathyC, occupational therapists and physio therapists come out to the house a few times a week to help with his arm and leg. He has a nifty knife/fork thingy to cut and eat his food, plus a shower chair. The therapists have a "skateboard" device to help with the left arm. Duncan and Lyn are looking at purchasing one so he can use it daily.

Thanks again everyone.
