Personally I would like to cruise with John Heald just to find out why everyone thinks he is so good. He may be that good, I have just never paid any attention to the cruise directors on any ship. I sure would be interested in seeing John Heald though. Of course with all the bragging about him I feel sorry for the guy trying to live up to that reputation.

Stormn Norman everyone wants to cruise with you and Skippy to learn your fashion secrets LOL. Everyone enjoys an original.

I cruised on the Triumph in June 2001, before I even knew who John Heald was, which he happened to be the cruise director at that time.
He seemed nice enough, and did his job well....but, I certainly wouldn't plan a cruise around him being on any particuliar ship. I'm going to have a great time, regardless who the cruise director is!

I wil be on my first cruise in August. I have read many post about this cruise director. Could someone tell me what is a cruise director? And what do they do that would make them good, bad or ugly?

I don't know about cruise directors but I would cruise again with the Captain of the Rhapsody of the Sea's in a heart beat! What a character! I never knew a Captain could be so much fun!

crusader the cruise director will MC all the shows. They will also make announcements during the day about bingo, trivia games, art auctions and other such activities. They will show up to start many activities than move on to start another one while their assitants take over in many cases.

In other words the Cruise Director is supposed to come up with things for people to do and try to get them excited about doing those things. They are usually very outgoing people.

John's a funny guy, who seems genuine and seems to love what he does. Although, he does plan to retire (or move on to a land-based occupation) later this fall, as he's marrying a young lady who worked on one of the ships. I wouldn't plan a cruise based on John being the CD, but I would include it as a factor.

John's a big guy. I would say he's about 6/1, probably weighs 300 pounds. I estimate him to be 45 or 50 years old. Short hair. Actually, according to the article in the link below, he's only about 38. The article below does not contain a photo, but it's an interesting interview of John.

Wow, I guess this person could NOT have been so impressed if it was him?"

I am on a ship I LOVE all cruise directors but HATE when they make so many ANNOYING announcements when you could read that in the "Carnival Capers"?LOL!

We've had John Heald as a CD before...and like RonB, we thought he was good but not the best. (Thankfully, I saved all of my Carnival Capers so I could go back and make sure we had sailed with him before. I'm not good with names. Don's description helped a lot.)

Crusader...I think whether or not people like a particular CD has to do with individual taste....just like most other things. We've almost always enjoyed our CDs, although some have been a tad annoying at times with their particular catch phrases. Unlike some who enjoy sailing with the same CD...we would prefer to experience a new one.
Once we've experienced all the CDs Carnival employees then perhaps we'll choose
a cruise partially based on who the CD is or is not.
