We will be in Juneau on June 22nd. We want to whale watch, but also go to mendenhall glacier. Is whale watching good to do in the late afternoon, around 4pm or is that to late. How much time do we need for mendenhall glacier. If we take an earlier whale watching we will only have an hour in mendenhall glacier. Is one better than the other. Do you recommend to fit both in.

We did the Glacier tour on our own, just get a local bus from the pier. It cost $5 each way I believe.
Then we did the whale watching with Captain Larry at Orca Enterprises. We have been with Orca Enterprises twice now with a 3rd trip planned for September :grin. I know several others from this board have used the same company without any complaints. :)

Time of day for whale watching makes no difference. The whales are there when they want to be. One time is no better than any other because mother nature does what she wants. As Barb said go with Captain Larry at Orca Enterprise for your best shot at seeing whales. Many of the Naturalists on the ships use him because he does such a good job.

In other words pick a whale watch and trip to the glacier that is best for you.

One member of our party of four will be pretty much limited to a wheelchair. She can walk a few feet, that's all. Would the bus trip to Mendenhall Glacier be appropriate for her?

Would a cab be a good alternative for us?

I also use a wheelchair. Cabs are pretty easy (I can transfer into them), and buses can be a challenge, as they don't always have lifts, or lifts that operate properly.

We found cabs in Alaska to be pretty cheap -- at least compared to other stuff there. And convenient. And most of the cab drivers provided a sort of "mini-tour" while they were taking you to your destination. :)

I'd opt for the cab, if it were my choice.
