Just got off the NCL Wind

My 2 sisters, my mom and I just returned from a cruise on the NCL Wind. I don't know why it got so many bad reviews. My 2 biggest complaints were that the ship was not stabilized very well and therefore there was a lot of movement felt whenever we were at sea, and my bed mattress was shaped like a hammock. Every AM I awoke with a back/neck ache. Other than that (and USAir losing my luggage!), I have no major complaints. The ship was clean, no foul odors, no long lines (except occassionally at the buffet lines), great entertainment, good attitude of crew and an enjoyable time had by all.
I would suggest you save your lounge chairs in the mornings of the "at sea" days and make reservations early for dinner if you want to make a certain show or have plans after dinner. The service was pretty good, but expect to spend at least 1.5 hrs. in the dining room for supper.
We had an OV on the promenade deck and we saw joggers outside in the mornings so we had to keep our curtains closed while changing our clothes---just in case. At night was the only time they could actually see into the room so we had to remember we could be watched. We spent very little time in the cabin at night before retiring so it was no problem whatsoever.
As a precaution---pack extra undies, an extra outfit, toiletries, shoes and a swimsuit in your carry-on in case YOUR luggage is lost. I did not have travel insurance and booked my flight independently so NCL would only give me a t-shirt, a toiletry bag and 1 free laundry service (all my clothes) as a courtesy. USAIR allowed me $225. because my clothes did not arrive until the 3rd day but I had to turn in my receipts. Even tho I only spent $100, they still cut me a check for the total amount. I was bumped from my return flight home and earned a free RT ticket and a free upgrade to 1st class on my flight. I was pleased to take the bump so that I could spend the night with my son's family. They might have paid for a hotel if I had asked for one.
WE visited the orphanage in Roatan and felt like it was the highlight of our cruise. We took the children gifts and pre-arranged to tour the ministry there. Brad and Debbie are such wonderful Christians and we plan to support them in the future.
The gym is very small and very crowded between 7-8 AM. There are only 4 treadmills , a few steppers and 5 bikes so get there early or sleep in late. The weight room was separate and didn't seem to be overcrowded. They have a free steam room and sauna but nobody was ever using them when I was in there.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Jean,

Thanks so much for posting. My wife and I are booked in an ocean view room on the promenade deck in just about 18 days. I'm glad to hear that people couldn't see into the room (for the most part) during the days. My question to you is was the room loud or noisy because of the people jogging? Also...did a lot of people peer into the room, or did they just pass by for the most part?

A few more questions if I may...

1 - What night did they serve lobster in the dining room? ( i don't want to eat at le bistro that night!)
2 - What night was the chocolate buffet? (can't miss out on that!)
3- Did they ever lower the minimum bet on the black jack tables to $3?
4 - Was there a good mix of age groups on the ship? Wife and I are about 30 and we're looking to meet some fun people our age...

Thanks so much. I have a lot more questions, but I'm going to spare you!

I don't mind answering your questions if I can remember them all. First, the joggers were not noisey but I did wake up to a whistler one morning. And every morning the crew would wash our window with a hose about 9 AM. I TRIED to get his attention by waving, but he didn't notice me. Another time a young boy put his face to our window to look in and I just happended to be in front of it. I put my face to the glass and stuck my tongue out at him (in fun!), but he didn't respond. I also jogged on the track and couldn't see in, but my sister walked at night and got some free entertainment.....
Thursday was lobster night and they served it in the Italian restaurant as well. I can't remember what night the choc. buffet was but I think it may have been Thurs as well. You won't miss it since they announce it several times. It was so-so because they had the same desserts on several serving tables. I only eat DARK chocolate so I wasn't impressed, but I'm fussy when it comes to chocolate. You will probably love it.
They had a sock-hop on Thurs PM so I was there when the choc. buffet started. I left at 11:30 and the line wasn't too bad by then.
There was only 1 formal night (Sunday) and I didn't have my luggage so I had to wear a moo-moo from the gift shop and thongs---not the underwear, but shoes! My sisters had gowns and I felt awkward standing next to them. THere is no formal wear rental so I was at the mercy of the gift shop.
There were some younger couples but I'd say the average age was in the 50's. LOTS of seniors. If you want good seats at the shows, go at least 1/2 hr. early. We enjoyed them, especially Pete, the juggler. I loved the gymnast, too, and the dancers were very good. The talent show was fun and very entertaining. If you think you might want to participate, BRING YOUR OWN SHEET MUSIC or background CD.
We didn't gamble except a few dollars in the nickel slots. I won $40 one night (which is good for nickels) on a machine called "something Party" with yellow letters. It must have been paying pretty good because I could never get back on it again. It was ALWAYS in use! I never played black jack so I can't help you on that one.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jean and Jeff!

Jean, I was on the Wind at the same time you were! It was my first cruise and the ship rocked more than I expected. Have you cruised before? Do you think all the movement was because of the weather or do you think it was because of the ship? I figured it was both, but my parents took a RCL cruise and my mom said their ship was rock solid even in high seas. Just wondering...maybe I need to pick larger ships from now on as I was fairly seasick. Didn't stop me from having a great time though! Pete, the juggler, was so funny! Jeff, I am not sure if he will be there when you are, but if he is, do not miss him! The shows put on by the Jean Ann Ryan company were great. We liked the Country Gold show the best, followed by the Sealegs, Circus at Sea show. Their first show started slow but got better, I can't remember the name of it. The lobster dinner was Thursday night, but I think that the choc. buffett was Wednesday night. I can say this with some certaintly because I am a chocolate freak! We went cave tubing on Wednesday and while I paddled like crazy (we had to make up time because of the tendering delay in Belize) all I kept thinking was that I was working off the chocolate I planned to eat! I thought the Buffet was yummy, but I would suggest sharing everything with someone else. The have huge slices of all the cakes and pies precut, so it is hard to just have a taste. I ended up with some things on my plate that I didn't like, and I couldn't remember were to get more of what I liked! Oh, well. It was yummy. Oh, Jeff, Le Bistro was 50% off on Thursday night when lobster was served. That is also the night that the ship is in Cozumel until 8:00pm (you need to be back on the ship at 7:30). I have all the Freestyle daily schedules, so let me know if there's anything else you want to know.

Jeff, I remembered that you had questions about deck 7, so I made a point of checking it out. Like Jean said, I couldn't see into the rooms during the daytime, but could see more at night. You will have the railing to contend with when you look out the window...probably the bottom half of the window will look out at the rails, but you should still have a pretty good view. Also, not to worry you, but just so you know...I did encounter a sewage smell on deck 7, but only outside. I didn't go in any rooms, but I didn't smell it in the interior halls. Also, the smell is only on the starboard side, iany only in the middle of the ship around muster stations G and F. We investigated and found that there were two large vents above deck 7 that force out stinky air. All the ship's toilets operate on a vaccuum system, so our guess is that this spot is where the ship's plumbing system vents that air. It might be a problem if you had a balcony above that spot. I doubt that it would be a problem inside on deck 7, but I'm not certain. If you are in the middle of the ship, you might want to check with a good travel agent or other cruisers to see if there's any problem in those rooms.

Oh, I never saw $3 blackjack, but they did always have a $5 table. We played some blackjack and a lot of roulette. I ended up winning about $450 total...not bad considering I paid about $475 for the cruise!!! I hope you have the same luck or better!

My boyfriend and I are 25 and 26. There were a few other couples in their 20-30's, but not a lot. It seemed like the majority on the ship were 40-60, but very active. We chose to share several meals and usually got put with couples in their 50's...everyone we met was really nice though. We were somewhat dissapointed that we didn't get to know any couples our age super well, but there was 1 or 2 couples that we spent some time with.

I am going to write a detailed review, but I've been really busy since I've been back and I haven't had time yet! I'll try to post it in time for you to read it, Jeff. Let me know ifi you have any more questions...I'd be happy to answer them! I found the boards tremendously helpful in answering my questions before I left. You can send me an email at robinfrutchey@hotmail.com.

Oh, if you take wine, I recommend triple bagging it with ziploc bags or something similar in case of breakage. We had a spill on the way home, but it only make it through the first bag...thankfully!

Jeff,

I just read another one of your posts (you roll call where you listed all the excursions you are planning)...It seems great minds think alike! We had very similar plans!

We booked the buccaneer catamaran in grand cayman, but didn't get to go because of the weather. We had brought our own gear and snorkeled at Eden Rock instead. The reef was a little hard to find, but once we found it, it was great snorkeling. If you need more information about this as a backup, let me know...I'd be happy to tell you more.

In Roatan we took a discover scuba course and LOVED it! The reef was teeming with life and we saw a Moray eel. We initially thought about going with Salt n Pepper, but I had some difficulty communicating with them and decided to go with Luna Beach (wwww.lunabeachresort). I HIGHLY recommend Luna Beach, but they do require a deposit for a reservation. The resort in the West End at the end of the beach, so it is kind of set apart and quiet. It has recently been remodeled and is just an awesome spot. the dive shop is great with all new equipment. The dive master, Mark, is great and they have a really nice dive boat. Matt and I had a private lesson and then went on the dive with 3 other people who were staying at the resort...we were the only ones from the ship. I took photos of all this stuff if you'd like to see them. Anyways, they had a very nice driver that picked us up, but I recommend getting your own transportation. The ship was 1.5 early into Roatan and we had to get online to email the resort to get an earlier ride. We didn't get to check for a response before it was time to get off the ship (the internet was down that morning), so we got off the ship not knowing what was going on. It was very chaotic and took awhile to find the driver. Once we did, if was fine, but it might be better to arrange your own ride there so you don't have to worry about the ship coming in at a different time. Maybe you could arrange for wherever you go to bring you back to the ship. Our driver took up to a gift shop the cruiseline recommended, Yaba Ding Ding...it was in Coxen Hole, which is not the greatest city...The driver waited for us while we shopped (bought a couple Dive Roatan shirts) and then took us to the ship. All in all, it was our favorite port.

In Belize we did cave tubing with x-stream (www.belizecruiseexcursions.com). There was some craziness with the ship being really late due to problems tendering (high seas)...I will have to tell you about that, but I don't have time right now. Sorry! In the end it ended up working out and we had a fantastic time.

In Cozumel we did some snorkeling, shopping (I shopped for silver, Matt for booze :)), and went to Carlos and Charlies and Senor Frogs. We also went to Pancho's Backyard and some other great places I will have to tell you about. We had a great day there.

I'll try to give you some more info. about Belize and Cozumel as soon as I have more time. You are going to have a great time!!! We have been talking every day about how much we want to go back!!!!!!! We would take the exact same cruise again in a heartbeat.

Robin, you are probably right about the rocking being caused by both the weather and the ship. The newer ships do have better stableizers. Still when your mom said the ship was rock solid even in high seas I wonder how rough the sea was when she cruised? If the water is rough enough any ship will rock. At least that has been our experience and we have cruised about 15 times on various lines and ships. Again, the larger and newer ships do offer a smoother ride.

Thanks, newmexicoNita! Good to know from someone with experience that it was probably both the weather and the ship!

Two weeks ago I was on the Norwegian Wind, and a coworker from my office was on the RCI Voyager of the Seas, a much larger and newer ship. We had a very similar itinerary, including being docked in Cozumel the same day. The night before Cozumel, and the cruise back from Fort Lauderdale were very rough on the Wind. While I didn't get sea sick, it did take me about a week to get my land legs back. My coworker who had been on the Voyager said that their ship did not rock at all.

WOW! You guys rock! Robin I had no idea that you were travelin'parrothead from cruise critic! And Nita you've been so nice to me since i first started posting on several of the boards. So, thanks to both of you for taking the time to give me your opinions about my many many questions.

We are so very excited about our cruise. We've passed the 14 day mark. I think as I write this we are about 12 days, 18 hours, and 19 minutes away from our cruise....but who's counting?!?! We're celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary and I've got just about everything planned. Now I just need to get through the next couple of weeks at work and we'll be on our way.

Robin, we may have changed our mind in grand cayman and it's interesting that you mention you went to eden rock, because that's just what we may do. I spoke someone and they hooked me up with a local dive rental shop near eden rock where we can rent gear and do a shore dive rigth there by ourselves! Did you see a lot of divers around there? I was told there are several tunnels and caves that you can dive there...should be interesting.

We are so excited about Roatan. All the experienced divers we have talked to have raved about the diving there. Jenette and I took a scuba refresher course just to be safe since it had been 5 years since our last dive. I'm ready to get wet and see some amazing fish and reefs while we're there. We ended up booking through a small shop at the Roatan Yatch and Dive club called Subway Water Sports. Several people on the boards recomended them and after speaking with them I was very comfortable booking with them. The price was very good as well, I think we're paying about 50 dollars less than booking through ncl.. I've heard about the resort you went to...we even considered it before we decided to go diving there.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the cave tubing in Belize. I've heard nothing but great things about that excursion!! I can't wait. It sounds so unique. Question....was the water cold? Fill us in on what happened there when you get a few minutes to type it :)

In cozumel we are sort of up in the air. I'm thinking of renting a car instead of diving and really getting a chance to explore the island. I'm not sure what that would cost or if they ahve some sort of international drivers license required. BUT, we are def going to Carlos and Charlie's and probably Senor Frogs. I heard people get drunk and dance on their table and other such fun sports! It really sounds like a hoot and should be a great time. Not sure what else we'll do while we're there. If anyone of you can give some suggestions that would rock!

I can't believe we're so close, but it still feels like it's forever away. I've been going to the tanning salon, well acutally both of us have, to get a good base tan before the trip. The wife has had me a pretty strict diet for about 5 weeks now and i've lost several inches which makes me feel much better. We've both been going to the gym 4-5 times a week and feeling a lot stronger and ready to do some great diving! Soon we'll be in paradise. The wind really sounds like a great value for what we paid, so I'm excited. I even put a little money aside so we can go to the casino every night and play a few hands of blackjack.

Thanks again for all the info to everyone. Anyone else that can speak up for some great tips on grand cayman or cozumel....let's hear em!

Just got off the Wind March 6-13. Had a fab time. The cruise was packed with lots of spring breakers...and will be like that for the next 3 weeks. At times, it was a little noisey with loud music, and lots of heavy party drinkers....but no major disaster to report.

Security at the ship was very tight about smuggling booze...so beware. I had some mickey's wrapped in bubble wrap in my carry on - no problems. Be careful with vodka and bottled water...they will open and sniff. Booze in checked luggages were held and you had to surrender them till the end of the cruise.

No major line ups at the restaurant...at the most 10 minutes.

At sea days, you are better reserving your lounge chair early in the morning, by 10am...you won't find anything.

Food was okay...ample choices. Lobster was served Thursday nite. Chocolate buffet was Wed nite.

Had a great time on the the islands. Got all my tips from this board and cruise critic board.

Grand cayman - 7 mile beach
Roatan - Canopy tour - excellent cable ride- must do - just outside West Bay beach - excellent beach!
Belize - cave tubing - was good...but was expecting more excitement
Cozumel - good shopping, went to paradise beach - excellent - free lunge chairs, floaters...excellent food - great price.

Gym was small...but got busy around 7am.

All in all - no complaints. Good weather, good crew..shows were good.
