Key West beaches

We like to do inexpensive shopping then head to the beach at most ports. We heard that the Key West beaches aren't great. We need shade and a cold drink. Prefer sand on the bottom and not rocks where we are swimming. Any info would be most helpful.

Don't plan on a beach break at Key West. This is a quaint walking town. Walk down Duval Street all the way to the Southern Most Point in the USA then return up the paralel street. Climb the Light House stairs for a magnicient view. Tour mueseums and the Florida White House area. Stop in (pub crawl) into any one of many great Key West stops. My favorite is Hog's Breath Saloon. If you are not up for walking, take a trolley tour on your own from Mallory Square.

There are several options. The Zachary Taylor Nation Park is on the Navy Reservation beyond the Truman compound are where some ships berth. Shaded, picnic tables refreshments, shieled by a breakwater and a jetty, snorkling available. We rrent bikes on Duval St and ride there.

In addition, you can to go the beaches on the south end. See the map at

Higgs beach is in a park area with shelters available.

We spent a week there several years ago and rode bikes everywhere.

Some of the hotels will let you use their beaches, too. Hyatt Pier House, which has tops optional, and Wyndham Casa Marina, near the southernmost point, formerly the Marriott <http://www.casamarinakeywest.com/intro.html>
