We are flying into LAX and leaving on the Star from the Long Beach pier. Can anyone help with recommendations for a hotel and info on taxis vs. the Super Shuttle or any other ideas? We won't be arriving until 6 p.m., but is there anything to do in the area in the evening? Thanks for any help you can give.

I will be on the same cruise and I live in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a big city and your question is too broad for me to answer.

1) What kind of hotel are you looking for? One of my favorites is Embassy Suites. I stayed in the one near LAX a long time ago. My suggestion would be to try Hotwire and Priceline.

2) What kind of night life are you looking for. One of my favorite spots is the Top of Five. It is a family bar (under 21 is okay) that turns (once every hour). However, it is in downtown which is about 15 - 20 miles from LAX.

There is a Ports o' Call (like Fisherman's warf) near the pier with a trolly that runs between the two. The fare is $1.00 per day (not per trip).

The Queen Mary hotel is near by (about five minutes away) if you want to get an early start on your cruise by having a pre-cruise night stay on an ocean liner.

You could go to the Santa Monica pier if you just want to blow off a little energy (depending on how tired your arms are after flying into LAX).

If you're sailing on the NCL Star, it actually leaves out of San Pedro harbor, not Long Beach.

You are correct. However, the two piers are only about five minutes apart (by car) so it is not a big deal.

I live in Long Beach and the pier's are about 25 minute's apart by car. If you go by the freeway it can be longer than that. The Star will sail from Los Angeles not Long Beach, so be careful if your in a cab. I sail on the Star next week form Vancouver to Los Angeles on her repo cruise.

I've made the drive between the Long Beach pier and the San Pedro pier several times in one day. It did not take me 25 minutes. And who takes the freeway? A few surface streets and a bridge and you are there. Leaving on the Lane Victory (a World War II liberty ship) we sailed close enough to the Long Beach port for me to see the Carnival Pride at her dock.

I even have pictures of both ports in one photograph (taken from a plane) at home I can post (if you want to see it). The two ports are not that far apart. In fact, the Long Beach port and the San Pedro port are neighbors, sharing the same break water.

Halcruzer's right. It's longer than 5 minutes. We did this back in March when we stayed at the Long Beach Coast Hotel and sailed on the Monarch out of San Pedro. We're actually also on this same cruise and will staying at the Los Angeles Harbor Hotel, (formerly the Sheraton). Come on Oct.!!!!!

Okay, so maybe I drive too fast (Catalina Express is next door to the San Pedro cruise terminal) ...
