The Legend is a Spirit class ship (my favorite Carnival class ship). The Legend has two kinds of standard balcony cabins. Those with a standard balcony (approximately 4x10) and those with an extended balcony (approximately 6x10). I have always opted for the extended balcony.
Why? Because you can sit facing the railing on an extended balcony. On a standard balcony you have to sit at an angle.
If you really want the best in balconies, then you want one of the aft corner suites. These balconies are huge and wrap around the side, giving you a 270 degree field of view.
If you are concerned about motion, then you want to be low and in the middle. The higher you are the more roll (side to side motion) you will feel. The closer you are to the bow or aft the more pitch (up & down motion) you will feel. That said, it has been my experience that if the ship is rocking, the entire ship is rocking.
I have had aft facing balconies, forward facing balconies and mid ship balconies. The main difference is air movement. Forward facing balconies can get windy at times. Rear facing balconies have very little air movement. Side facing balconies get lots of air circulation without feeling windy. Also, most rear facing balconies are not fully covered, meaning that one, the people above you can look down into your balcony and two, so can the sun.
The amount of time spent on the balcony is dependent on you, your friends, how much interest you have in the on board activities and the itinerary. I spend the least amount of time on the balcony when I cruise with family. I spend the most amount of time on the balcony on sea days.
Of my prior 15 cruises, I have been inside twice, ocean view four times, balconies six times and suites three times. My next three cruises are all on balconies. One of my favorite activities is to go to the buffet and bring back breakfast to eat on the balcony. I also like to sit on the balcony and write my reviews at night (I write my review while on the ship). During the middle part of the day I spend the least amount of time on the balcony.
