Less seasick - Carib or Pacific?

We are trying to plan a Family Christmas vacation but my mother gets seasick and doesn't want to go. She tried the medicine last time but said it didn't work for her. I have been to the Caribbean but never out of California to Mexico. Are the seas less rough? Do the ships hug the coast or do they go way out and then back in? We are looking at the Diamond Princess out of Long Beach to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Cant help you with your question about the rough seas.. but... wondering when it was that you mom tried those motion sickness meds.... they are usually quite helpful. There are a few options, Bonine (oral meds, there are other brand names too, get non-drowsy), Sea Bands (bands that go around your wrist that have something to do with the pressure points) and the patch (which I believe goes behind your ear). Maybe a different remedy would work for her than what she tried last time. Good luck!

Oh yes, and =welcome to the board!

That stretch of water heading out around the Baja peninsula can be very rough -- generally much more so than the Caribbean... and December isn't really the best choice for smooth water in either place.

The open ocean is supposed to be a lot rougher the the Caribbean or other seas.

Been to both. The Pacific side - along the Baja peninsula til you get to Cabo - is definitely rougher than the Caribbean.

Agree with others that your mom should try other seasickness remedies. Maybe meds along with seabands and ginger?

There are usually 2 days that are typical more rough than others on the Mex. Riv. itineraries. The first is the very first day heading down (not quite as bad) and it's usually cooler too. The most rough day would be once you leave Cabo, as you head North toward LA or San Diego. There are two currents that collide in that area and it provides a rough ride. The closer you get to LA, the cooler it gets.

If you can handle just 2 predictable days of rough seas, go for it. Ofcourse, it all depends on the time of year and whether it's hurricane season, etc. Take along the Transderm Scop Patch (buy it online without a perscription), Bonine and/or Meclizine and you'll be fine. :)

Luck of the draw...
Our experience was different than most folks on here. We has a much smother cruise on the Mexican Riveria in 2/03 than Western Carribean 2/02 same week each year. The water was like glass on the Pacific the whole week! wonderful, except you almost didn't know you were on a cruise!!

It mostly depends on the weather as others have said. In our case there was a huge storm in the Atlantic that week 2/02. Clear skys on 2/03 on the Pacific Ocean !
It really depends on stormy weather and waves!!.

Hello...
I used the patch and loved it! I didn't notice any side affects and didn't feel ill once!

I sailed to Mexico last year and we didn't have any problems with rough water but you do not see land for the first 2 days!

Happy sailing,
Alley

The Pacific is anything but - tends to be rougher than the Atlantic. Caribbean is your best bet.
