Sorry, I would have answered sooner, but I couldn't type while laughing.  This is why I don't book directly with the cruise lines.  Some of the reservation reps have no clue, and you spoke to one of them.  The space at the stern end of the Conquest class ships, which includes both the Liberty and the Glory, is definitely NOT public space.  I have marked the Riviera deck with a red line (in the photo below).  The space that the Carnival reps claims is a public deck is where the aft lines are for tieing up the ship, including the necessary winches ...



Given this, I suspect you will hear some noise when the ship docks and undocks.  However, I would suspect that you will be awake already, and this should not be a problem.


As for engine noise, I don't have any personal experience.  I have been on the bottom deck more than once, but always in the middle.  I would suspect that engine noise would not be a problem.  First of all, the engines are far below (not directly below) and well sound and vibration proofed.
