Thanks so much for your help, after you stopped laughing I don't know enough about the ship to tell the guy he was BSing me, but I did suspect something was up. I knew the place to go was here because so many people are multiple cruisers.

I called carnival today and complained. They have now assigned my mom cabin 1236 (middle of front 1st section) and me 2277 (right beside front elevators). They moved me for free and charged $100 for my mom. We've been put on a waiting list for a balcony, but I don't see that happening. It was the best I could convince them to do. At least if mom hates her cabin or there is too much noise we can trade. I would hate for her first cruise experience to be bad because of something so silly.
