Liquor on Board

I'm sure this has been asked before but here goes:

Going on the Grand in September and was wondering, if you buy any liquor at the duty free shop can you bring it back to your room.

My husband thought you could but I thought they hold it till the end of your cruise.

Who is right?

Thanks in advance!

You can order liquor to take home and it will be delivered the last night of the cruise. You can also order bottles from room service (a bit higher, but still saves you money on drinks). We usually buy rum and several cans of coke for our room. The litre of rum was about $20.

The Grand is a great ship. Enjoy!

Kathy that is a great idea.

I am really looking forward to sailing on this ship, we have only sailed on RCCL and wanted to give Princess a try.

I'm sure you'll have a great time! We've been on NCL once and Princess three times (#4 in October). We have been thinking of trying RCCL next year. Maybe Voyager class or Brilliance/Radiance. Which ship were you on? Did you enjoy it? We love cruising...doesn't matter which ship or where it goes, if we are on it, we have a great time!

Kathy,

We have been on the Monarch of the Seas and the sister ship the Majesty of the Seas. RCCL is really great. The Monarch has been recently updated but if I were to go on another RCCL I would pick the newer ships that are out. A girl at work just went on the Explorer of the Seas and had a great time and loved it and it was her first cruise. Good Luck! We are hooked on cruising and there is no better way to spend a week than on a cruise.

On the Sun Princess the other week, ordered a bottle of Absolute to the room and it was $20.

Also, I usually pack miniatures in my suitcases (checked bags), usually wrapped in zip locked bags (just for extra insurance) and have never had those confiscated, but with the ease of room service, think I'll be stopping that next time.

I am a message board junky before I go on vacation and I am thrilled to find this one. Many of my questions have been answered. My best friend and I are going on the Grand September 21 and we have been stressing over the liqour on board. We bought wine and are bringing that. But I do not like the prices of drinks on board at all!!! Does anyone have any more details about getting the bottles of liqour through room service or dare I ask.......sneaking it on the boat!!!! We are not beyond that...sorry if that scares people. =(

We are also interested to find out if being the age that we are if we are going to find others there that are the same. We are 25 yrs old. We are not huge partiers, but we like to have a good time. i chose personal choice dining and I am concerned that it will be hard for us to meet other people. Any suggestions would be great.

I saw others on this board that are sailing when we are.....maybe we'll see you there!!

Hi Kelsey,

You'll have no problem with Personal Choice dining. Just tell the Maitre de that you'd like to share - with some fun people! He'll take care of you.

Have a great cruise!

Kelsey,
We've sneaked a few bottles on board. Just wrapped them in clothing and left them in our luggage(not carry on). Frankly, we found with day trips, dinner and shows very little time to sit in the room and drink!! I didn't like my bar tab at the end of the week, but it was very conveinent-- 16 or 17 bars on board!
I think you can have fun at any age we are 37 and 40, I believe, or guess, Princess demograghics are likely 28-58 not to say you wont have a total blast, I am refering to the show music, the comedians, and the over all talent Princess hires. Princess as far as i can tell is the total "baby boomers" cruise line!!! ---Ron

As was pointed out, you can order a bottle of liquor from room service. If you order it from the duty free shop, you will not get it until the night before disembarkation. Also, I have seen people CARRY - OUT IN THE OPEN - cases of beer and soda when they board. I purchased a 6 pack of beer at our first stop and put it in a bag and brought it onboard. I never saw attendants confiscating liquor. I enjoy getting the special drink of the day and that is usually enough for me in the afternoon. A cold beer is real good - especially on a balcony! You can also bring wine aboard and there will be a corkage fee if you bring it to the dining table. If you don't drink the whole bottle at dinner, your room number can be put on the bottle and available for the next night.

Thanks for all the answers......We are bringing stuff on board. It may seem like a lot of extra work. But I can't afford to not like my bar bill at the end. I have a tight budget! And I have so much here that I can just bring it with me. We are 5 days away and very excited! Again thanks for the info....Kelsey

The "official" policy is no booze brought on board. This was the policy before 9/11, or so I was told, but it was not enforced. Now it is, for safety reasons. You might put liquid naplam in a Vodka bottle. Any booze you buy in port, SHOULD, i say should be tagged when you return to the ship and delivered to your stateroom the last night of the cruise. It all depends on who is running the x-ray machine when you come back on board and how busy it is.

Checked bags are x-rayed and if they see bottles in your bag, they are within their rights to open your bags and inspect them.

I got this from talking to the head of security on the Dawn on our last cruise. I understand from people who have cruised lately, that this has gotten a little lax.

I intend to buy a bottle or two from Princess for in room consumption, the couple of extra bucks is not worth the hassle. But purchase mixers (Coke, Sprite, GingerAle) outside and bring it on, much cheaper and they won't hassle you over it.

I talked to Princess today about this subject. I called to ask if it was possible for our
fridge to be stocked with beer. She had to put me on hold to find out. We drink Coors Light and i'm not sure if it was available. She said there is a beer package available, but we COULD bring our own beer. The only liquor that is not allowed is HARD liquor, i.e. gin-vodka-tequila etc.... So b.y.o.beer!

Zip Lock Bags are essential in the packaging of liquids for consumption. :grin Also remember if carrying from home that its MUCH more difficult now because of the flamability issues. No liquor MORE than 150 Proof will be allowed to be transportrd on a plane. Therefore if a bottle is seen thru checked xray then U will be asked to open the bag for examination to make sure its less than 150 Proof and the bottle is sealed. In reality the purchase of liquor thru room service at their price is going to be equivalent or better than MOST liquor store prices are offering so it makes sense to buy it thru room service.
