I sailed on the Maasdam Novemeber 2001. I carried a few bottles of wine in my carry-on. They were not taken from me. Has this policy changed on HAL? I have been reading boards on other cruise lines and they seem to be cracking down on bringing your own liquor or wine on board at embarkation. Any insight would be appreciated. We are going on HAL in December.

Same policy. No change in their permitting pax to tote along their wine/liquor ..if they want to lug it with them....yet.

Most of the other cruise lines including Princess have modified or stiffened their rules regarding bringing alcohol on board. I am happy to say that HAL is not one of them. It may save you a few bucks to bring some wine on board, but one can purchase as much liquor as one wants in the on board duty free store and take it to one's cabin. Point is, it's cheaper to purchase liquor on board.

i received my documents today 10/5 for a sailing on Ryndam 11/23. It said in the know before you go section. "Please note beverages may not be brought on board during embarkation or in ports of call" I too would like to carry on a few quality wines. Anyone with any recent experience carrying on. I love to carry on.

Premium wine is available for sale in the onboard duty free store and can be taken back to the cabin or sent to the dining room with a small corkage charge. Liquor is also available to take back to the cabin. So far with HAL why tote.

I'm not sure if this adds to this discussion or not- but we really enjoy the wines on board ships. I notice MOST are "Foreign" wines -not wines "For SALE IN the USA" because they don't have the preservatives the US REQUIRES [ which give me a headache!] So I PREFER to purchase my wine at sea [ and NEVER get a headache!]

I have sailed on Princess, Celebrity and NCL since 9/11. I have not noticed a stiffening in the policy in regards to bringing wine on board. I have had no problems and many times I end up bringing 4 to 7 bottles depending on the length of the cruise.

I will be on the Massdam in two weeks so I will let you know.

If one is so inclined...you can drag aboard whatever spirits you desire.

I have no interest in lugging it when everything/anything we desire is available on board....if a specific bottle is not on their wine list or available in the shop on board.....surely there is something else you can order. Plenty of choices with something for everyone.

Isn 't half the experience of travel trying something new. I don't necessarily subscribe to the mantra....we have our special wine we HAVE to have for our special celebration.

With the thousands of wines in the world...maybe you just might find a new "favorite" by sampling something new??? In SOME CASES, maybe this is the "cute cover" for we want to drink but we want to avoid buying it.

I was on the maasdam last week and brought on five bottles from various ports, no problem....also for liquer you should wait and buy on board ship...such cheap prices and HAL is the only cruise line that lets you have it to take with you to your room etc...

I do not recall seeing any beer for sale in the onboard duty free store. You might have to tote that.

I'm glad they sell alcohol in the ship's stores to take back to your cabin. I would much rather buy it on board. We started taking our own on the lines that will not allow you to buy in on-board store and take it back to your cabin. this is my firs HAL cruise. I will buy it on board if I can.

Someone told me that statement in the "know before you go' about not being allowed to take beverages aboard refers to open containers, like cups of coffee. Makes sense since they now put everything through a screening machine. I took liquor aboard in August (and a bottle of champagne given to me by the flight attendent) and they happily put it through the screening machine. No problem. Bought liquor in ports and they welcomed me and my booze back aboard.
S7S is right though, the liquor store prices aboard are very reasonable if you think they will have what you drink.
