Trevor Hudlin Tours is your answer!
My DH and I went to Jamaica for the very first time on our cruise on the Carnival Conquest (10/3 sailing). We were nervous having heard some of the more interesting stories, but we had lucked out!! I had hired Trevor Hudlin (Trevor Hudlin Tours www34.brinkster.com/trevhudlintours/default.html) for a tour from MoBay to Ocho Rios (including Dunns Rivers Falls). We arranged the whole tour over email. After comparing notes with our fellow cruisers, my DH and I by far had the best experience in Jamaica. Trevor picked us up right in the terminal. It was so easy to find him. My DH and I were the only ones on the tour. Trevor drove us all over the northern part of Jamaica. His van was very clean, well maintained, and air-conditioned (most importantly). He showed us a far more personalized and complete tour than the cruise ship could possibly offer. When we got to Dunns River Falls, Trevor had the tickets pre-purchased for us, escorted us into the park, and secured us our own tour guide. While the cruise tour groups was cattle-carred onto large buses, we had our own tour. We saw the cruise tour going up in one big group (35+ people at least) going up the side of the falls and not even getting to experience the more unique spots of the falls. We had the time of our lives, crawling all over the falls, having our guide take our picture all of the way up. After we were done at the falls, Trevor was waiting for us right outside the park. After the falls, we went and saw some of the James Bond/Ian Flemming sites. We also saw the gate of Coyanosa (Heaven) and got some great scenic pictures of Ocho Rios. We did some shopping in Ocho Rios. Trevor took us to a store which was good for an all-inclusive shopping trip - coffee, rum, linens, jewelry, etc... (He had also shown us a shopping center that if we had more time he likes to take clients since it doesn't have the hassle of the central shopping districts with the craft vendors.) We drove nack through the city of MoBay seeing the center city, the residential areas, and tourist centers. All through our tour Trevor told us about Jamaica's history (did you know that Jamaica split from th UK in 1962 or that slavery was finally abolished in 1933?), culture, life, points of interest, and native flora and fauna. We even learned a folk song in the native Jamaican language (Patois). I can still sing Carry Me Achi to Lindstead Market... On our way back to the ship, Trevor stopped at various roadside fruit stands and got us local produce to try - sugar cane and quidnits (sp?). We got back ot the boat with about 1.5-2 hours to spare. No problems at all. It was a truly special day, one of the best on the cruise.
The cost? It was about the same as one of the cruise ship's half day excusions for the two of us for a whole day with Trevor on our own personalized tour (we of course added a nice tip for such a great day). This is extrememly cost effective if you have a group from I think 2-14(?) people.
My DH and I are looking forward to going back to Jamaica to have Trevor take us to Rose Hall or Appleton Estates and definitely some shopping.
Even if you're not going on a cruise and need any sort of guide, transportation, or shopping type services in Jamaica, give Trevor an email or a call. He will gladly accommodate you.
