Los Angeles Departure?

Couple of questions

Any suggestions on where to stay prior to cruise?

Any rough ideas on how much taxi cost from Airport to cruise port?

Princess "cruise plus hotel packages" identifies Marriott Los Angeles - has anyone done this and would this include transportation to the ship?

Has anyone stayed at Holiday Inn - San Pedro?

Many thanks

A couple of years ago I stayed at the Doubletree Hotel San Pedro which is at the Marina very close to the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center. It is a little more expensive but very nice and I don't mind paying more for a nicer hotel.

The Holiday Inn is also close by and there is also a Best Western right across the street. The pre cruise hotel packages are way more expensive than booking on your own.

A taxi could get pretty expensive from LAX. It is about 20 miles but if traffic on the 405 freeway is heavy it could take 30 to 45 minutes. I usually recommend Prime Time Shuttle from LAX. They offer shared van service for $16 per person round trip or a private car service for up to three people for $75 round trip.

=welcome to Cruise @ddicts and =funsign on your cruise.

We've booked the Crowne Plaza San Pedro for 1 night prior to our Sapphire cruise next month. I booked it through Priceline for $65. The Crowne Plaza also has a free shuttle to the cruise pier. For transfers to and from LAX we are using SuperShuttle. $14pp with coupon code UYR59.

Thanks for the tips...did you bid on the Crown Plaza Hotel room for that great price? We are traveling end of Jan and the current price on Priceline for this hotel is $171?????????????

Yes, I bid on the room. I chose San Pedro, Zone 3, and bid for a 3 star hotel. The only 3 star hotels in Zone 3 are the Crowne Plaza and the Double Tree Inn. Either one would have been fine, both are close to the pier and have a free shuttle.

I started at $65 as that seemed to be the going price posted on another Cruise board. With taxes it's around $80.

Booked pre and post cruise package with Princess at the Marriott LAX $69 pp includes pickup at the airport transfer to the hotel.
Pickup the next day - all baggage handling, airport to hotel to stateroom. Hard to beat for the price. Same thing for post cruise.

We have also booked the Double Tree for our April 4, 2009 cruise. Have got so many good reviews on the Hotel. We are also leaving your car there for the 7 days.

DaveJohn:

What time did you schedule your pickup with SuperShuttle at the END of the cruise? Our fllight isn't until mid-afternoon, so we are in no hurry. But by the same token, I don't want to be standing around the cruise ship terminal for an hour waiting for our van to LAX!

Just curious what you did!

We have cruised out of San Pedro a few times, the last couple of times we flew into Long Beach rather than LAX to avoid the congestion plus have stayed in Long Beach and cabbed back to San Pedro pier ($23). Long Beach is less industrial and clean with lots of sites to take in either pre or post cruise.

As a native Angeleno, I would suggest a stay at a LAX airport if you have an early morning flight the next day. We did this right after our wedding in 1995, staying at the Marriott that night, and catching the hotel shuttle to the airport for our morning flight to Honolulu.

The downside to staying here otherwise is that you are not near too many restaurants and it's not a great place just to be walking around. To get anywhere for a bite to eat or a store to buy the things you forgot, would take a taxi, which are expensive here.

Many people who are coming in for a cruise from either San Pedro (most of the cruiselines) or Long Beach (Carnival) find it better to stay in San Pedro, Long Beach, Santa Monica, or other beach cities. SM's hotels may be a bit costier, but I find the Third Street Promenade nearby to be a nice place to eat (lots of restaurants, stores, street performers). It's an pedestrian only outdoor mall that's just a few blocks away from Ocean Avenue.

Long Beach is a short taxi or shuttle ride away from San Pedro and has some nice restaurants at Shoreline Village (the Queen Mary and the Carnival berths are right there). You can also enjoy the excellent Aquarium of the Pacific nearby.

San Pedro is basically industrial but many cruise passengers stay in a couple of the hotels there (I think they will shuttle you for free to the World Cruise Center at the Port of Los Angeles.

A major thing to remember is if you get a really low price for a hotel room, beware. The hotel could be located in a bad area.
