Low-Carbing on Carnival

I don't know if anyone has ever asked this before but, my hubby and I are low-carb people. No sugars, pastas, breads, etc. I never order anything special in restaurants--just regular protien meals without the carbs--maybe subbing a veggie side dish for the potatos. How accomodating are the Carnival staff in this area? I hear that some ships offer sugar-free desserts that are wonderful. Yay! Is anyone else a low-carb eater?

I don't think you'll have a problem. Not every entree comes with potatoes. You can always order extra on salads or appetizers. They won't mind if you order double entrees.

Thanks! What about the bartenders? Do you think they'd whip me up a sugar-free blender thingee if I asked them to? Should I bring some packets of Crystal Lite for them? I know, goofy question. But I can't cruise without at least one frozen thingee!

Having been on the Atkins diet for several months now, I can relate to your dilema. It is difficult to limit one's carb intake even at home. On a cruise ship, it is even more difficult, but not impossible. Since I usually eat at the buffet for breakfast and lunch, I focus on omelettes, smoked salmon, deli meats and cheeses, as well as the salad bar offerings. At dinner in the main dining room, simply avoid the pasta dishes and high carb veggies. The waiter will usually substitute something like broccoli for potatoes if he is asked. There is a sugar free desert offering each evening, however; there are a lot of carbs in any desert, sugar free or not. As for the frozen thingees, most are made with fruit juices which I'm sure you know are loaded with fructose, a source of lots of carbohydrates. If you are happy with drinks like martinis, whiskey (or scotch) and soda, or perhaps something mixed with diet soda, you can avoid the carbs. Also, white wines, such as champagne, are very low in carbohydrates. Good luck, and have a wonderful cruise!

We had absolutely no problem with a low Carb diet while on Carnival. The one thing you must realise though is even though they have low sugar deserts the deserts are not low carb. Many things besides sugar have high carbs. They only lack the sugar. We had them bring us certain berries and certain fruits that are low carb. Not all fruits are low carb.

As I said we had no problem finding things we could eat for a low carb diet and we had some excellent meals on Carnival.

I was on the Paradise in May, and actually commented that this would be a real easy place for someone on Atkins diet!

Great burgers on the Lido deck - without bun, of course, a fish or beef entree at night, omelettes and bacon for breakfast each morning, lots of low-carb choices.

But, on the other have, if it's carbs you want, you'll find plenty of those choices, too!!!

Man....I just wish I had your will-power! I must have my breads and sweets!!! I was born without metabolism and willpower. Why couldn't I have been given one or the other????

Well I know what it is to love breads! But seriously, after the first two weeks of giving up the empty carbs (white flour, sugar, noodles, etc.) the cravings went away! Now the low-carb breads they've come out with aren't bad, and I do have those occasionally. Today for my birthday my neighbor came over with homemade FUDGE! (I nibbled a tiny corner.) My son says it's the best fudge ever, and six months ago I would have agreed. Heck, I would have had that plate gone! But sweets no longer hold me in bondage. Anyway, I know it's not for anyone. But it has helped me lose weight and feel a lot better. This way of eating will get me to my goal weight long before the cruise.

I do exercise by using the track on each ship I have been on. Please don't be overly good and not try some of their fantastic food on Carnival!!!!! They do have wonderful places to work out and remember you shoul;d be in the water exercising also. Enjoy! I have about 15 pounds to loose before I arrive on the Triumph on Sept. 6th. I will work my hum hum off and get on board and eat some of the good stuff ( not everything in site although tempting) but stay active and you should be ok. Remember - have fun on the cruise! You have paid for it........
