I have taken two cruises to nowhere from Norfolk's Nauticus, where all the cruise ships berth now (Oct 02 and Oct 03). With winter departures they have installed semi-permanent heated and air conditioned tents around Nauticus for processing. They have the check in tables, xray scanners, etc. It went very smoothly last Oct. You may want to check out <http://www.cruisenorfolk.org/>

Living in Virginia Beach, I don't use the long term parking. Their long term parking is about a mile away from the pier, but they provide shuttle bus service and porters at the guarded parking lot and to return on debarkation. For short cruises I park in one of the downtown garages and pull my bags accross the street to Nauticus. For longer cruises, like my two Maasdam cruises, I will either take a taxi or have my daughter drive us to Nauticus.

With 40 cruises originating in Norfolk this year, plus port visits for others, they are gearing up, and expect to move on a permanent terminal.

My wife really enjoyed our cruise several years ago on Ryndaam and wanted to book HAL again. When we saw these leaving from Norfolk this year, saving us $200 pp airfare, we jumped at it and booked the February sailing for her birthday and the December one for our anniversary.

The ship returned Saturday from the first trip and arrived 4 hours late, causing some jammed up lines as passengers waiting to board for a 5 pm departuren 1/31 were waiting and they didn't get all the pax from the 1/20 sailing until 3pm. They were delayed by weather around Cape Hatteras. I think, assuming they return on time, that they will have the bugs worked out of the embark/debark process by Feb 21, the third debark, fourth embark date. I check out the arrival by observing it on the webcam from the Norfolk Tower Cam at <http://www.wvec.com>

I'd like to have an informal get together on the first day at sea, perhaps in the Crow's Nest Lounge about 1pm? Too hard on sailing day, and it will be dusk by sailaway on deck.

I know I saw a link somewhere but it eludes me now. Does anyone have the link to the camera showing the port where the Maasdam sails from in Norfolk? Thanks.

Tower cam link that is focused on the port, most of the time, and definitely when the ship is in. If you look carefully, the pier is in the center of the picture, just astern of the battleship Wisconsin. <http://www.wvec.com/cams/norfolk.html?1>

Information on transportation from the airport, which is 8 miles from the termninal is located at <http://www.norfolkairport.com/transportation.html> Not sure of the cost as I live here and have never taken it, but the contact information should be able tell you.
