Maitre d'

Speaking of dining room staff who can make a cruise special, I was wondering if anyone was acquainted with Thomas Grindlay, maitre d' on the Rotterdam, at least he was in April. We usually find maitre d's to be invisible until tip night or to have little interaction with most diners and be totally unforgettable. Thomas, however, was just great- friendly, speaking with us every night at dinner, very visible and a really nice guy. He loved our table and we know he was the one responsible for seating us at the Captain's table (an officer who sat with us several evenings told us that), but I'm sure Thomas was special to many other people on our cruise, too. HAL does hire really great staff and officers. We would love to run into Thomas on another cruise.

Peaches, I agree totally, Thomas was the Maitre D' on the Ryndam when we sailed B to Bs in Dec/Jan 03. He is/was the most personable and sincere Maitre D' we have had on 16 cruises (and he just happens to be a Canadian). He promised to call us on one of the Rotterdam's visits to Halifax this summer. We hope he does, as we would like to return his kindness to us.
