On July 15 2009, MSC Splendida entered the natural Grand Harbour of La Valletta, Malta.

To mark the special occasion of the maiden call of the stunning new flagship of the MSC fleet as well as celebrating the 10th anniversary of MSC Cruises calling at Malta on a regular basis, Maltapost plc's Philatelic Bureau issued a special second set of four stamps in the Maritime series entitled ‘Cruise Liners'. This collection follows the first set which was issued in November 2008 and which, among others, featured the MSC Musica. The first day cover of this set of stamps will have the date of MSC Splendida's maiden call at Malta.

MSC Splendida, christened last 12 July in Barcelona during a spectacular gala show, will call at La Valletta (Malta) 21 times in 2009 and 39 times in 2010, in her summer and winter itineraries throughout the Mediterranean.

The ship carries 3,959 passengers, she is 333.3 metres long and 66.8m high. MSC Splendida has 5 swimming pools and a total of 1,637 cabins.

MSC Splendida's maiden call to Malta was well attended. The President of Malta George Abela, together with the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat as well as the Archbishop, Mgr Pawl Cremona, and Austin Gatt, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, were among the distinguished guests welcomed on board by the Splendida's captain, Giuliano Bossi, MSC's Managing Director Domenico Pellegrino, MSC's commercial manager emerging markets, Alfredo Spadon and Norman Hamilton, Hamilton Travel, exclusive general sales agent of MSC Cruises in Malta.
