I will be cruising to the Southern Caribbean in January. One of our stops is Margarita Island in Venezuela. Can anyone tell the name of a beach(s) that is nearby where the cruise ships dock? Also, what is there to do at this island? Thanks.

I was there two years ago. Very undeveloped and funky. I took a “zoo†tour that was fascinating but odd. I'd beware of sidetrips on your own on this one. Many locals don't speak the language and they aren't tourist savvy at all. They have little regard for time, and some people missed the ship. just fwiw.

There is a nice beach right next to the ship dock. (free) You can rent chairs for $10, and the water is nice. Snorkeling is not bad either. Look for the shell piles off the trails for some soveniers. There are a couple shops, stands, a bar and that's about it...unless you go into town.

The Island has a breathtaking ocean side. We hired a truck and driver for the day. The ship is on the dry side of the island and downtown is about a 45 minute drive away. We went to the supermarket and internet there with our driver and he helped us with the money exchange. They took our dollars. Anyone who sticks around the pier will not see the beauty of this place. There are shops, no internet but there were 2 phones at the pier. you can buy a phone card in one of the shops but expect a long wait to use it.
There is also a liquor store at the pier.

If you look under the Celebrity Galaxy Reviews (from Jan. 02) you will see my full review of this island. In a nutshell, we found the beach next to the boat to be very disappointing so we rented a tour guide (easy to do, they are lined up) and her car and headed for Playa El Agua. It was a fabulous beach lined with palm trees, white sand and great waves (not good for snorkeling). We are so glad we made this excursion and it was a highlight of our trip!

I suppose it might have a lot to do with what you personally enjoy. We were on Isla Margarita a couple of years ago and we took one of the ships shore excursions which gave an overall tour of the island. We enjoyed just exploring. Some of the island was very pretty.

visited Isle de Margarita on the Galaxy in 2002. The beach next to the dock was very disgusting-trash, ants- just bad. Most people left the ship, walkee
d around for awhile and returned to the ship as if it was a "day at sea". One exception: if you're into italian art glass, one of the shops at the dock was a Murano factory store. They had some beautiful pieces at very reasonable prices.
