We will be in port one day in Marseilles on November 7th. Would it be better to take a cruise sponsored shore excursion or hire private tour guide? Also, there are many excusions to choose from and never having been there, which would be best: Marseilles City Tour, Aix-En-Provence on Your own, Les Baux de Provence, Cassis, Luberon Villages? Thanks very much.
I was on Voyager in July and our last port was Marseille. I had a difficult time deciding whether to go on my own or do a ship tour, finally I decided to go on my own into Marseille and do a ship tour in the morning--the ship arrived at 7-something in the morning and left at 5 p.m. The ship's tour of Aix-En-Provence tour was about 4-1/2 hours and gave you 2 hours on your own in Aix-En-Provence, plus a guided tour. It is a lovely area. When I got back to the ship around 12:30, I hopped on the shuttle into Marseille and spent an hour or so sightseeing--walked a bit, took the little train tour around the city and up to Norte Dame--and had lunch at a cafe, then it was back to the ship. It was a full day but all of the port days on this cruise were full, going from 7-8 a.m. to 5-6 p.m.
You can go to Aix-En-Provence by train independently but I did the ship tour for two reasons: (1) when I put together the cost of a cab from the port to the train station, the train tickets and cab back to port, it costs about the same as the tour through the ship. (2) with the ship tour I could be assured of being back in time to hop on the shuttle into Marseille for a little lunch on my own. If you would like to spend the whole time in Aix-En-Provence, which is certainly do-able, then I would recommend taking the train independently.
I think private tours are always better but I was on my own in Marseille so the cost was too much. A couple on the ship paid $400 for a private tour of Aix-En-Provence and Marseille while we were there but they loved every minute of it, so it was worth it.
Have a great time.
