Hi. My friend feels I will be ridiculous looking if I bring my trench coat with zipper lining....she's going for the slicker... Any thoughts? Is this too bulky??

Seeing you are on the Alaska board I assume you mean to bring the coat for cruising in Alaska in May. I have cruised Alaska in May several times and will do so again this May. Even in May Alaska can have some nice weather and you may wind up carrying the coat do if carrying the trench coat is fine with you I say go for it. Personally I prefer to carry as little as possible and a trench coat can take up some room.

Figure you will get rain in Ketchikan but not necissarily a hard rain it will probably be a light rain. It will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler when you go into the fjords to see the glaciers. You still may see some weather in the 70's but it is likely that you can see weather in the high 60's in May. I did have one cruise in May where the coldest day was 67 degrees so anything is possible.

If you are more comfortable with the trench coat bring it but keep in mind you may be carrying it some of the time.

Thanks for your response. Maybe I'll opt for the lightweight packable jacket and just dress in more layers like others are recommending. I appreciate your response! I just want to be WARM! I was on a Princess from NYC to Canada and it was FREEZING on the water.

I agree with PEB. Go for layers.

Last year, I worked for one of the cruise lines in Ketchikan. The morning could start out at 50 degrees and raining - even in May. By noon, the sun could be out, skies clear and temperature at 69 degrees. Layering is the only way to go and always prepare for rain. Even if it means buying one of those 'throw away' plastic ponchos for a dollar.

Last year we went in mid May. It stayed in the low to mid forties for the entire cruise and there was a constant COLD wind. Take something with a hood that will knock off the wind. It was sunny, though, for the entire cruise>

If you have a balcony I suggest some sort of ear covering. Layering worked fine for every other part of me while on our balcony but my ears were always cold. : ^ )

I did an alaska cruise 3 years ago,. My wife gave it to me for a wedding anniversary gift. The weather varied from day to day. The day in Juneau it went from a cold driving rain with it snowing at the top of Mount Roberts, in the morning to overcast and about 60 by the afternoon. That was neat to say the least.
The day at glacier bay was sunny and cold with the wind out on deck. Be sure to have your sunglasses with you when you are at the glaciers. I had to go back to the cabin to get mine. The sun bouncing off the glaciers can be blinding.
Skagway was cludy and around 60. Sitka was the nicest it was sunny and about 70.
Just goes to show you how much the weather can vary from port to port and morning to afternoon.

Have a wonderful cruise

Jerry
