Can any of you veteran cruisers out there give me some tips on the best routes for a Mediterranean Cruise?

Hi Notellin, welcome to Cruise addicts. There is no BEST route for a Med cruise, it depends on the ports that interest you. My only Med cruise was 12 nights from Barcelona to Venice and back, I loved it probably my favorite cruise yet after 20, but we only saw Spain, Italy and France. It was very port intensive and I did alot of research on each port, and still made a couple what a would call not the best choices (at Livorno, I went on another wine tour rather than go to Florence, which I regret). We avoided Greece because we intended to do a Windstar cruise to Greece in the fall of 2001, but the world changed that fall. Conniemc is going on a Princess Med cruise this fall with stops in Turkey and Greece, that also looks fabulous. How long of a cruise are you planning ? What countries or ports interest you ? That would help make your decision, I would be happy to answer any other questions.

I am not sure there is any "best" itinerary, but my favorite in the Med was a 14 day from Venice to
Barcelona. It took in port calls in Spain, France, Italy (3), Greece, Croatia, and Turkey. Rome is
a must see, in my opinion, and you need a cruise that gives you two full days there, or one that either
begins or ends there so you can add a day or two.

Good luck, and welcome to these boards.

Thanks for the reply. We're going for 7 nights next summer and even though I made two med cruises with the navy forty years ago, I just needed some fresh information.

Unfortunately I think you will find that 7 nights is not nearly enough. We have done it twice with slightly different itineraries on Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas. We loved them both (12 nights each). I agree that Rome is a must see, but all of the ports had something very special to offer. We have well over 30 cruises under our blets, but these are the ones that are most memorable. We would do it again in a hearbeat if it wasn't for the horrendous flights involved (live in Phoenix). I flew for work for many, many years and the thought of all of that time on an airplane is not appealing anymore!!!

I like it because of the overnight in Venice and that leaving and returning to Barselona is a lot cheaper for my flight then Rome or Venice.

I'm flying British Air from Phoenix AZ to London non stop then a short flight to Barselona

I would like to hear from other about shore excursions. The 2010 list is not posted yet online.
