Is the Mendenhall Glacier worthwhile? If so, we're looking at a land trip with a wildlife boat ride or the helicopter. Which would you recommend? Thanks.

I've booked a boat ride myself. Helicopters give me the willies! I'll look at glaciers from afar, I guess!

Hi we just got back. Mendenhall was definitely worth it. It is not far from town and can be accesed many ways. We also did that and the wildlife quest. The boat was great, new clean and the crew terrific. We saw humpback whales, sea lions, seals, eagles and sitka deer. No bears I'm afraid. The day we were in Juneau all helicopter tours were cancelled due to bad weather. A few folks got out later in the day and loved it.

I agree with Sue. We just got back as well and it was GREAT. We did the helicopter tour only. We got real lucky and had a very clear day. The views are amazing. Don't miss the chance.

You better believe it is worthwhile and worth the price. We did this in July. To be on the glacier & see just how blue the ice is, I found amazing. Be sure to have a warm sweatshirt and a hat or earmuffs. It was 23 % with 15 mph wind. a bit on the brisk side. The young folks waiting for you on the glacier are informative & very pleasant. They offer to take your photo, etc. We had a chance to drink glacier water. There was even a waterfall on the glacier.
Not to worry,. the ice was 450 feet thick! There were up to 5 hellicopters on the glacier at one time.

If you visit Mendenhall by land, do not take the time to see the movie because if you are on a tight schedule like we were (only had an hour at the Glacier) then you will miss seeing the Glacier in depth.

Where is this movie? At the visitor's center? Do they lead everyone in, making it awkward to get up and leave?

It is at the Visitor Center. They do not lead everyone in, they just let you off the bus and you can go see and do whatever you want. We saw the movie because the bus driver recommended it.
