My wife and I got a great deal on Celebrity's Mercury for their 1/10/03 sailing. $2053. for two adults and two children for a cat 6 outside cabin. The cruise line has told us that most of their ships are family friendly ( including the Mercury ). My travel agent has mentioned this line is for older crowds and there are few kids on board (ages 4 and 6 ). Has anyone ever take kids or grand kids on this ship? We have traveled Princess, RCCL and Carnival. Is there a real difference between this line and the other three? The ship has a reputation for outstanding food and service which interest us the most.

I love the Mercury. Go and have fun. The kids will be entertained by a Childrens Social Director and will keep your children entertained. Don;t expect to see too many children. It is an adult fun party cruise ship. Most ages are from 40 on up. That is why I have booked a second time on it.
Most parents think about their children being entertained first before themselves. Be a little selfish and be first to be entertained this time. You will love the food, service, thelassotherapy pool at the Aqua spa. You will love dancing at night or seeing the shows.
Your children will be well entertained too by their own (Nanny) with the other children.
Please don't say I called her a NANNY.
I think Celebrity Mercury is a real classy ship and has great rates sometimes.

I forgot to mention to be sure to book the early dinner time because of the children.

You also don't need tuxs for the children for formal nights.

There is an alternative dinning in the Palm Springs Cafe patio where the dress is super casual and you will be able to eat there sometimes for a $2.dollar fee per person.
The children will love it.

I hope you can get a babysitter or take a Granny or Aunt with you for night time.

Celebrity is a great cruise line for children, lots of great things to do. My daughters are now 13 and 15. We have cruised many celebrity ships when they were younger. We are cruising on th MERCURY on Nov 22. I have booked a group of 23 people on this cruise a cat 12 is 574.35 per person. There are always more children on holiday cruises.

Celebrity counselors are great with the kids, they totally entertain, work on talent shows
with the kids and have many nice things that they give the kids to bring home, I remember water bottles, backpack, address book. We have also sailed on Holland America,Carnival and last thanksgiving Voyager of the Seas RCCL. This will be my childrens 3rd Celebrity Cruise and my 6th, favorite line.

I have been fortunate to cruise many times, with many different lines, both with and without kids, friends and family. What your travel agent told you is true, as a general rule, Celebrity's average age is slightly older than the other lines you mentioned. However, considering when you are sailing (Jan. 10th), the average age for most any cruise line is going to be higher, as it is just after a vacation time and most children are back in school. So, no matter what line you choose, will most likely have far fewer children than normal - and, since most of the major lines all have good children's programs (some better than others, but still all good), I would choose your cruise based on value and what appeals to you, as opposed to choosing for the kids. Knownig that no matter who you cruise with is not going to have many kids on board, and taking everything you said into consideration, I think you choice of the Mercury for your time frame, is a very good value on a very good cruise line. (I have not been on the Mercury, althoug am sailing her on Jan 3rd, but have been on many of Celebrity's other ships). The only other suggetsion I can make, is to look into a Category 6 outside cabin vs your Cat. 5. For what should be a very minor difference in price, I believe you get a far better deck location. Best of luck in your decision, and happy cruising.

Oops, sorry, reversed cabin categories - meant to say look into a Category 5 instead of your Cat. 6.. Also, because the category 5 is considered "delux", it comes with a VCR which may come in handy for the kids.

Thanks for your advice. We have decided to stay with the Mercury. The writer of another board told us that Celebrity has no children programs during the off peak months. We called the cruise line and they told us that was not true. They do scale them back depending on the amont to children aboard. And it is true that what ever ship we travel onin Jan. there will be fewer kids on board. Who cares that there will be more seniors than younger couples. It was just the same on the Ms. Paradise. My boys are well behaved and this is their fith cruise and our seventh.

All of the outside cabins on Panoramic Deck have a small sofa. Cat.5. If you join the Captain's Club for a $35. lifetime member fee, you can get an upgrade, plus other free stuff.
I think that would be a better deal if you want an upgrade.

I think you made a good choice staying with the Mercury - hope you have a great cruise. You may want to keep your eye on the prices. SInce I have booked my 1/03 cruise on the Mercury, prices have alread dropped once, which let me upgrade my cabin category for the same money. As we get closer, they may just drop again. Early January typically has some of the best bargains, and the fact that this cruise leaves on a Friday could mean it won't fill up as fast as those leaving on a Saturday or Sunday. Even if prcies don't drop further, it still sounds like you got a very good deal on a very good ship. Best of luck.

Good suggestion Lucy, however, from Mickey Sr.'s earlier comments, it didn' sound as though he had cruised Celebrity before. If he has, then you are right, he could sign up for the Captains Club before the sailing and get an automatic one category upgrade from cat. 6 to cat. 5. For the $35, he gets a far better location, the VCR fo the kids, and all the other Captain's CLub benefits.

Hi! We are also thinking of going on the Mercury on Nov. 22. We have a cabin on hold. Cat. 5 for 3 for 1500. I think this is a good price. Do you?

Anyway we have a 7 year old girl? Do either of your daughters like to hang out or play with 7 yr olds?

Last Aug in AOS our then 6 yr old got very spoiled because a 14 yr old girl she meet on cruise critic (through the moms) liked to take her out and about on the ship in the evenings, video games, swimming, walking the promanade. She loved being to do things with a big girl.

Thanks

OPPS!!! You are sooo right RIC. I forgot it is their first cruise.

What I like to do is check with the uniglobe.com website to see what cabins are available. That is how I got my cat.5 cabin. I told my travel agent I wanted Cat.5.
She was able to get it for me by talking to the Celebrity manager of reservations.
This week I will be asking for an upgrade because I have joined the Captains Club.
Most of the cabins will be released by T.A. companies who were holding onto cabins.

Hi JSR- Jean. Please sign up with Celebrity for the Cruise Critic Party for Nove.22.
Lindy Owen's group has children going on this cruise too. The Mercury is going to make us all a party so we can all meet. I think it is very important to take the children to this party so they can meet too. Go to the Celebrity website to sign-up.

Yes, you did get a great rate if it is with a window.

I will let you all know my cabin number as soon as I get my upgrade.

Handy hint. It may be cheaper for you to fly into Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami if you
are flying in one day early. Otherwise it is best to fly in straight into Miami.

Dear Luci,

Thanks.

I already signed us up for Cruise Critic Party. We will bring our daughter.
When is the cruise critic party?

We are flying into FLL using Rapid Rewards Tkts on Southwest.
We are trying to do this trip cheaply.
We just did a suite on Adventure out of San Jaun in Aug followed by a week in St. Thomas. We should really not be going on vacation again but I thought the price was too good to pass up.

Our cabin has a window. Cabin 5065

We will miss not having a balcony but we have to stick to the budget and this is our first Celebrity cruise so an upgrade is very unlikely.

Hi Jean. You really love to travel. I have a co-worker who would like to get married in St. Thomas. I love ST. Thomas. What hotel did you stay at?

I guess Celebrity will let us know when the party will be on the ship. These parties are something new for Celebrity. They are trying to find new ideas on giving us a better time on their ships.

I think you will be happy with your cabin. They are 172sq. ft. They look really nice.

My e-mail is lucia91371@yahoo.com

SEA YOU, LUCi

Luci,
We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas. The rooms were lovely. The food was terrible and the service hot and cold. The beach was good for us but it is small. They are supposed to open a large spa soon.
We got a good deal but if we were paying full price I would have felt ripped off.

On the other hand I would whole hearitly recommend the Ritz Carlton in San Juan--small rooms,. excellant food and service. We stayed there a couple of days pre cruise.

Yes, we love to travel. Even our soon to be 7 yr old is hooked. We are just more limited by school now then we used to be.

Hi Jean. Thank you for the info. on St. Thomas. I think I will tell my co-worker to stay in
a condo when she gets married. That way she can do her own cooking. I love to cook.
Too bad the food wasn't that great for you.

I can hardly wait for the cruise on Nove.22nd.
