Hi,

Recetly booked for the 11 day Mexican cruise in a Sky Suite, March 2007. Was looking for any information regarding this ship. Our cruise person said she is one of the smaller ships but well appointed and a good staff.

Thanks,

Gramps

We sailed the Mercury a couple of years ago to Alaska and she was a beautiful ship. I wouldn't consider her small either. Smaller than the new mega-ships that are coming out but still at 77,000 tons or so she's still pretty large. We found her staff to be the best we've ever had on a cruise. Always happy greetings and smiles from the room stewards to the guys hosing down the decks.
I'm sure you'll love her as much as we did.

Hi,

The DW and I are going on the Mercury September 19th for a 5 night Pacific Northwest cruise. We are booked in Sky Suite 1225. A little smaller balcony than the other Sky Suites but we don't mind. We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on the 20th. Also will be toasting the end of my career at my current employer after a good 20 year run and the start of my new job in the first week of October.

I usually take copious notes and digital photos when I cruise, so if you would like any info about the ship or the Sky Suite, send me a PM or email.

Thanks Everybody,

25 years, where did the time go! Beautiful wife, 2 great teenaged kids, a Pug and a Chihuahua puppy. I'm blessed.

This year has been terrible in my family and this cruise is a welcome respit. In the beginning of February, my dad passed away after a short but valiant battle with liver disease. As the only son, it fell on me to comfort and assist my mother. This was not done out of duty but love and respect for my mom and dad.

2 weeks after he passed away, I was handed my job termination date of September 30th and severance package. Now there is stress. The top 2 stresses a person can go through within 2 weeks but I had to continue on for my family and mother. Our company was sold to a multi-national transportation firm last year and they did not need any of us that worked in Information Technology. In July, I was approached by a company that I had consulted for on the side and asked if I would be interested in a full-time position to help them with struggles they are having with systems automation and backups. I jumped at it but then the lines of communication dried up and I thought they had a changed their minds. On Monday, I was contacted by the Manager of Computer Systems and he apologized for not talking to me sooner but he was on holidays for the month of August. He came in from his holidays to sign the paperwork to finalize my position and ask me if I would be ready to start on October 3rd. You Bet!!

Then just after he hung up, I got a call from my wife telling me that her dad has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. He is 84 and is already talking about giving up. So we start all over again with him just like I did with my dad.

Hope I did not bore anybody but sometimes I have to let it out.

I will be taking lot's of photos and writing up a review. I'll post the photos of the Sky Suite and the Mercury in the gallery during the first week of October. I've heard good things about Celebrity and we are really looking forward to it.

18 days to go! But we still haven't received our docs. A call to my TA eased my mind. I filled out the forms online and I may not receive true documents like I am used to. The printouts will be my documents and I will be handed luggage tags at the pier according to her. Our reservation still shows on their web site as booked and paid.

have a great cruise. I too have had a tough time lately. Dad died in 2003 and I unlike you , Ilooked after Mom out of a sense of duty instead. She is now in care and is safe and cared for and we have got on with our lives. I have struggled with my health for the past 14 months, but have rounded the turn after I was able to "let go " of my Mothers care.

The Mercury is a wonderful ship and we absolutely loved her. In 15 days I will be on the Summit.
Don't worry about E docs they are just as good as the other kind

15 days til the Summit
118 Days til the Galaxy

Hi hct,

Same to you on your 30th! I promise we will leave the ship in the same shape as when we got on! Heard lots of good things about Celebrity.

We were in Astoria last May on the Radiance of the Seas. We went to the Columbia River Maritime Museum and took a tour of the lightship Columbia that used to sit out at the mouth of the Columbia River. We had visited Fort Stevens 5 years ago when we spent a couple of nights in Astoria so we bypassed it this time.

My mother has told us we will be surprised on our 25th anniversary day, says she has planned something with Celebrity on the Sept 20th

Because of a snafu at Celebrity, we just received our cruise documents this morning! Finally we have everything in order.

4 days and we will be relaxing in Business Class on the Amtrak train from Vancouver to Seattle. 5 days and we will be wandering the decks of the Merc. Now we are starting to get excited!!!!

We just used Amtrac to return from San Francisco to Vancouver. Oakland to Seattle was quite an experience and I would not recommend it. Bumpy and rough all the way toilets out of commision etc..
Seattle to Vancouver is another experience all together. Great cars fairly smooth great scenery and would highly recommend it. Great way to start you cruise or end it for that matter.
Enjoy the merc.

Hi BSeabob,

I read your review of your cruise on the Infinity. I agree, the Coast Starlight (Starlate!) service has gone downhill over the last year. We last took it from Seattle to LA in May 2004 and it wasn't as bad as you described. Your train was supposed to arrive in Seattle at 9pm, I doubt very much you arrived at that time. It seems to be anywhere from 3 to 12 hours late arriving in Seattle or LA. It is a combination of underfunding by the US government and the host railroad (Union Pacific) not caring how much they delay the train. Used to be years ago that passenger trains took priority over all trains, not any more. As an employee of the Canadian National Railway, I follow the industry closely.
The train between Vancouver and Seattle is one of Amtrak's highly patronized trains in the system. Good service, nice cars, fantastic views of Puget Sound and 95% on time performance sure help.
I live just above the tracks near Boundary Bay and as I was writing this, I watched the northbound train from Seattle pass by the house. They are running about 15 minutes late.

Well, 4 hours before we leave for the train station. Will post a review of train and cruise when I get back. First cruise on Celebrity and I always read your reviews on Celebrity. Thanks very much for them, they have been helpful. We have done 6 cruises on RCCL, 2 on Princess and 1 on NCL.

Hi Gramps et al,

My apologies for not reporting in sooner. It's been hectic for me since we got back. I had my last week of work ending on Sept 30th and then signed my employment papers for my new job on the same day. I was supposed to start on Oct 3rd but my new manager saw how drained I was after leaving 19 years behind and told me to take a week off and start next week. I have not spent much time on the 'puter since.

The cruise was fantastic. We could not have asked for better weather considering the cruise headed up close to Alaska and in the open North Pacific Ocean at times. Seas were very smooth all the time. Except for thick fog in the early mornings of our 2 sea days and 1 hour of typical BC West Coast rain, it was clear skies and warm weather.

Celebrity's service and food was everything people told us about. The Sky Suites were roomy for the two of us. It was nice having a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom instead of the usual small stand-up shower. The complimentary use of the spa was another perk we used frequently, particularily in the evenings. There was never anybody else in the huge Thalassotherapy pool except my wife and me every time we used it.

Our butler Mateus and stateroom attendant Asep provided stellar service. One or the other always seemed to be around and everytime we came up to our suite they were there to open our door and make sure our room was made up to our liking.

We had full breakfast every morning in our suite served by Mateus. Afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, cookies and cakes in our suite at 4pm also served by Mateus and appetizers in our suite at 5pm usually while we were getting ready for dinner. Formal night was on the second night after departing Vancouver which was also our 25th wedding anniversary dinner. The dinner room staff gave us a cake and sang to us.
Nice touch!
We had a table for two which was very intimate and our waiter Anna and assistant waiter Jose had my food allergies memorized after the first night and I didn't have to mention it again. Food preparation was fabulous every night. My wife always went with the Chef's suggestion at dinner. Me, I'm a meat and taters man. The Beef Tenderloin could be cut with a fork it was that tender. On lobster night, my wife said they were very tender so she had 2. I had prime rib which was perfect and the horseradish sauce they use took your breath away. Just the way I like it.

We usually ate a light lunch in the Palm Springs Cafe and every day was a different theme. Asian, Mexican, Italian, Thai themes made the lunches interesting. I tried a lot of different dishes I never thought I would try including sushi. I liked sushi so much we went to the sushi bar a couple of times for snacks.

The rest of the onboard staff was friendly and always said "Good Morning Sir" or "Good Evening "Ma'am" whenever you passed them on the different decks. The staff in the stores were also very good. All their Alaska clothes and trinkets were 50% to 75% off for the whole cruise.

The entertainment was good. Not being Broadway show fans, we missed a couple of shows but the comedian was hilarious the night he was on the bill. Tears were running down the faces of the passengers next to me as they were laughing so hard.

I bought the cruise DVD as my wife and I were on it numerous times. Once during sailaway, once during cha-cha lessons and they videotaped us having our formal portraits done. The first time we have ever been on the cruise DVD, neat!

The demographics of the passengers were about 75% retired couples. We were in the minority when it came to being Canadians. Most of the passengers came from Washington, Oregon or California. They mentioned that Celebrity discounted the cruise for passengers from those states. Us Canadians did not get any discounts, at least when I booked the cruise in March.

The one big thumbs up I give to Celebrity was the way they handle the last full day on board and disembarkation. I always hated coming back from breakfast on the last day as the luggage tags and customs forms would always be on the bed waiting to be filled out.
Instead on the last day, our stateroom attendant knocked on our door and hand delivered everything and explained what we were to fill out. I don't know if this only applied to suite passengers or whether it applies to all passengers but it's a nice touch and doesn't leave you with those last cruise day blues.

On disembarkation day, instead of just finding a place to sit and waiting for the shipwide announcement for all passengers with certain colored tags and numbers to leave the ship,. we went into the Celebrity Theatre and they only made announcements in there when it was our time to disembark. There are various lounges and areas for other passengers to congregate as told to us by our butler and announcements to disembark are only made in these areas for those passengers. Much more civilized than the cattle call to leave the ship that I have been used to.

As for the ship. Considering her age she does not show it. The furniture in our suite looked new and with the exception of a couple of glass stains on the counter in the bathroom, it looked as new as the Diamond Princess which I cruises on 6 months after she was put in service. One issue I had was only one power receptacle in the room. With 3 cameras and a razor, it was a juggling act tokeep everything charged. Next time I go on the Merc (and I will soon), I'll take a small power bar or extension cord so I can do 2 at a time.

I have not posted my photos to this site's gallery. I use flickr.com to post photos online. If you want to have a look at them, they can be found at the following URL:

<http://www.flickr.com/photos/gordr/sets/1017455/>

I hope you enjoy them. I am still missing the last sea day. I took just under 1 GB or 1,200 photos and digital video so what I posted is a small representation of the cruise but it does have the highlights.

If you guys have any questions, let me know.
