Mercury Vibration

I have heard nothing but good things about this ship accept stories of vibration that comes from the stern of the ship. Some former passanger have mentioned engine problems while othershave said this ship has had them her whole life. Now I have heard stories of ships with such problems. My grandfather used to tell me about the old battleship North Carolina having such a problem that she would travel in and out of the Brooklyn Navy yard day after day as the builders tried to fix the problem. After a while she was nicknamed the showboat because New Yorkers could count on seeing her pull in and out of New York harbor on a daily basis. Unfortunetly the builders could not work their magic and she was plauged with this problem her whole life.

Yes the Mercury does vibrate while sailing. It is nothing drastic and she sails fine. You do feel it especially in the dining from but it is NOT a violent vibration. It actually is kind of relaxing and it does not take long before you forget about it. The Mercury is a beautiful ship. Celebrity is not my favorite cruise line but I have no complaints about how the Mercury looked or sailed when we did our Panama Canal cruise on her.

If you have a room on the stern of the ship, like we did several years ago, the problem with vibration is not relaxing. It is most apparent when the ship is docking. Since this is usually occurs early in the morning, do not get a room on the stern unless you want an early vibrating wake-up call.

The Century class ships (Century, Mercury, and Galaxy) all have vibration problems in the stern especially when they are leaving port. I did not find it to be that big of deal on the Mercury and Galaxy.

Every ship we have been on has a certain tone to it (vibration). Most are very noticeable when entering and leaving port when the thrusters are put into use also. Celebrity RCL & HAl. It's part of crusing. That being said if noise bothers you don't have a cabin over the stern or port thrusters for those early morning gt ups.

We sailed Mercury two weeks through the canal last November, then again this spring to Alaska. Noticed some vibration in the dining room but as the others indicated nothing excessive. There is one cabin deck below the dining room (Continental-Deck 4). You might want to avoid the aft cabins as these would be directly below the dining room.

On the the two week cruise we were deck 5 forward outside (near the forward elevators) and there was no vibration problem there as well as later on deck 8.
