Hi It will be my first time on a cruise ever and I am going on the mexican rivera tomorrow. Can anyone advise whether or not I need Mexican Pesos? Should I change currency before hand or will they have exchange on the ship?

Thank you! I am so excited.

US dollars are widely accepted in most ports. If using US dollars, make sure to bring small denomination bills because they will make change in pesos and the last thing you want is to get stuck holding a large amount of pesos. Debit / credit cards are great too.

We went to the Mexican Riviera in 07 and we only used US. No need for Pesos at all. It was our first cruise also. You will have a wonderful time.

We do this cruise once sometimes twice a year, just be aware of the exchange rate which usually hovers in the 10-1 area, and as Michael says, keep your bills small because they want the American dollar and will most always give pesos in change, that is what the last port is for, getting rid of all the Mexican change, and as a last resort, just take what is left and give it to the cutest kid selling gum or beads on the way back to the ship, they don't get to keep it but maybe it helps someone. I think RCI is the one that does the itinerary backward so probably Puerto Vallarta will be your last port, and not many kids hang around the port entry area there so go over to the little flea market area just South of the plaza area and dump off the change there.

So do you think after the NEWS about the DRUG WARS on National TV last night and the warning NOT to go to Mexico that it's still safe to cruise there? I think I'd be staying on the
ship and not taking a chance if it was me. Those "Drug Soldiers are crazy and there are just so many of them according to the pictures they were showing.

Kathie-K2,

I also saw the coverage, and of course we all worry how this awful drug war will affect cruising the Mexican Riviera. I have just booked my first Mexican Riviera, after 20 other cruises. The ports that the cruise lines call on are not as affected by the drug wars, and in all towns there are rough spots. I live 15 miles north of Detroit, go downtown often, know where I am going, and don't save a buck to park off the beaten path. I have cruised solo many times, 10+, but always consider my safety, do my research or homework ahead of time. I rarely stay on the ship, but if I do, cause there isn't anything new or nothing I want to do again, I enjoy the ship so much, with less passengers on board. WIN-WIN....

I will be going on Mariner of the Seas this July. I have been to Mexico before and they accept American Money but you will get Pesos in change.
