Hi, this will be my first cruise on Celebrity. I have a friend who thinks that this is the BEST cruise line. What is the "pod" problem that others have written about on this forum? Am anxious to hear from others that may be booked on this cruise.

In a nut shell the X ships in the M class have Pod systems that propell the ship. Since their inception they have been a number of cruises canceled because they have broken down. One was canceled at sea. Recently there have been no canceled while sailing but there have been the odd one where ports have been missed or time in certain places has been shortened.
Here's a list of what has happened.

Millennium Inaugural date June 17, 2000

Pod failure dry dock January, 2001
Pod failure dry dock July 16, 2003
Pod failure dry dock December 10, 2006
Pod failure on New Years 2007 cruise and again in January. (Note: ship continued to sail at reduced speed until dry dock in mid April 2007).

Infinity Inaugural date March 3, 2001

Pod failure dry dock late 2001 (3 weeks)
Pod failure dry dock April 13, 2002
Pod failure dry dock January 29, 2003
Pod failure dry dock March 2004
Pod failure dry dock March 27, 2005
Pod failure Ports skipped and cruise shortened on two cruises
(July 9 and July 16, 2006) Electrical problem in pods.
Pod failure dry dock September 13, 2006
Pod failure November 19, 2006. (Note: this ship continued to sail with altered Itineraries and some missed ports until dry dock on May 20, 2007).

Summit Inaugural date October 1, 2001

Pod failure dry dock March 2002
Pod failure dry dock July 18, 2003
Pod failure dry dock September 2004
Pod failure dry dock June 3, 2005
Pod failure dry dock May 20, 2006

Constellation Inaugural date May 1, 2002

Pod failure dry dock May 1, 2002 (salt water leaked into pods at launch time).

I recently got off the Infinity which dry docked in MAy. The ride was great. I was able while aboard to speak with an engineer at length about the problems. They feel that the manufacturer has improved the odds BUT he said. "It's mechanical" we can't say anything for sure.

Dear LORD Bob....you sure keep a good list of details!
::eek:
Makes it sound very menacing...but even though we were a half day late getting back from Hawaii in April, due to reduced speed, I hear Infinity (fingers crossed) is still doing well after the Victoria Harbor dry dock in May.

By the way, Domicella, Celebrity IS the best cruise line. Been on them all, and for many years now, it's the only line I'll take.

YOU'LL LOVE IT!!

They say (on the other board) that the Millie will be in dry dock in April for refurbishing. I am taking her in May, so I'm hoping they take a look at her pods, too.

I really think that problem is behind us...and you are very fortunate to sail her so after the dry dock...she should be GORGEOUS!! And you get the added benefit of crew who are just starting their contracts...when I sailed Infinity in early October...everyone was coming to the end of their 4-8 month contracts, and it SHOWED. Everyone seemed very tired and anxious to return home to their countries for a well deserved break.

The pod problems mentioned that the Millennium, Infinity and Summit all suffer from is a design flaw that has plagued these three ships since they were first launched. The pod problems do not happen on most cruises, but when they do they can be quite disrupting of a planned itinerary.
I can well understand the reaction of those who have not yet been caught on one of these cruises but when you are on one of these pod cruises I think you come away with a different impression of these ships. As one who has been badly burned by one of these problems, I can say they are certainly no fun when they do happen. If you would like information about one of these "pod" cruises, please see my review of my Celebrity Summit cruise that I posted on 11/21/07, for what can happen. As I said most cruises go off without a hitch and you should be alright but it is something that should be considered when booking one of these ships. I do like the size and layout of the ship but I don't think I would ever take a chance on another heartbreaking cruise, like the one that I had on the Millennium's sister ship, the Summit.

To the best of my knowledge, there have been no reported problems since each ship went into final dry dock....last summer.

Does anyone know of a pod issue that's less than 8-10 months old? I believe the issue is 'done with".

This would be a VERY good thing, as we'll be on the Millie in May. Oh, BTW, found out the Mllie won't be in refurbishing dry dock until April 2009! Oh well. I'll pack of double dose of that "Good Attitude" and a little shabby chic won't bother me.
