Misquoted fare

I booked a HAL cruise by going through the online chat on the Holland America website. I was given a price, a booking number and it was put on a courtesy hold. When I called the next day to make my payment, I was told that it had been booked incorrectly and that it would have to been cancelled and rebooked with an additional $190.00 per person for the category I booked.

I would have thought that a courtesy hold would guarantee the price and when I wrote to HAL, no compensation was offered and I was simply told that the first person who booked made a mistake.

Has this ever happened to you? I discovered that HAL does not honor misquotes or offer compensation in this case.

Sorry that this has happened to you.

I do not deal with HAL directly and we don't put any quotes on hold. So I am not sure if this happens often.

When I book a cruise, I use a TA that we have been fortunate to have for over 23 years. We also know what we are going to book and our TA contacts HAL and gets a confirmation back right away which shows the price that we have agreed to. That way we have it in writing (via fax) exactly what we are paying.

Since you didn't have anything in writing for a "hold" cruise I doubt if anything can be done. It is your word against the agent's word about the quoted price.

Actually I was given a confirmation number and the quoted price was available to see. But I was told it was incorrect and would have to be cancelled. I also printed a log of my online chat, so the quoted price was never in doubt.

Why not try a T/A who specializes in cruises and see what price you get for the same cruise, ship, date, and room category. There are many out there.
