When the ship docks in Montego Bay, Jamaica is there a beach nearby that you can hang out on for the day? Also are there shops and stores, etc. in walking distance from the port where you can purchase souvenirs?

When we docked from Princess's Coral Last year we were at the "International Quay.".a place loaded with all kinds of goodies,t-shirts,coffee,tons of everything..you name it..and it is not available to the streeet vendors..ie;no hassles..the minute you leave this and head out in Montego Bay ..WATCH OUT!!!..you literally CANNOT walk 5 feet without someone grabbing your arm, pulling you to or into a shop, offering drugs, souveneirs, hair braiding ,offers of call girls..( to my hubby..:dizzy,"upstairs while Missus gets hair done!!.".I kid you NOT>>=eek).. you name it..it is like facing the gauntlet..I'm sure there is a beach nearby..we just gave up..I took 1/2 hour of harassment ,signaled defeat to DH Mark and high tailed it back to the ship..instant peace and quiet and safety on my 5 star floating hotel..sigh..I have never felt so unsafe or hounded in 10 years on Princess sailings..Mark is 6'2"" and 225# of big fella and he was getting cranky at all the hassling.=grrr .they will not stop or take no for an answer.. The only way I will ever clear off a ship in Jamaica is with a secured paid for excursion..2nd time it's happened and will not happen a 3rd!!..Good luck..such a beautiful island and a mess to deal with..:(..Joanne

We did some quick shopping at the pier. We ignored everyone who tried to get us to come in their store. There are no beaches close by. We took a taxi to a private beach called Rose Hall Beach Club. Taxi was $60 round trip. Beach was $8 per person and included chairs and floats. There are restrooms and food available.

Darlene, when did you do Rose Hall Beach Club? We were just in MoBay and we were told by tour operators that the beach is closed now......that the Ritz took it over. So, I went with another deal I found online........Sunset Beach Resort. You can take a taxi from the ship for $5 and $20 covers all your food, drinks, including alcohol and non-motorized watersports. It was a GREAT deal! There's three pools, I believe, one has a swim-up bar and three beaches, one is au natural......just so you know. I'd do this again in MoBay!

Give Trevor Hudlin at email: trevorhudlin@hotmail.com He is a great tour guide. He works that Montego Bay area. He's very flexable and can help plan a great tour. He took us to Dunns Rvier Falls and to Margarite Ville. great time.

Just found this board, sorry to answer your question so late. From what I've read on the boards, you really need to have a guide--a lot of people never want to go back to Jamaica because of their experiences being hassled. The guides are your "protection"....They really do watch out for you and make sure your Jamaica experience is a great one. There seem to be some good tour guides in the MoBay area. We used Trevor Hudlin, he took our large family group to Mayfield Falls, a very different experience than Dunns River Falls, but it was wonderful!! We'd highly recommend him. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
