I have noticed lately that hardly any ships go here anymore, people seem to favor Ocho Rios. I wnet to Montego Bay in 97', and I thought it was alright, I was just wondering why so many cruise lines have switched over to Ocho Rios...

I'm not sure but we also enjoyed Montego Bay very much. We went rafting on the Martha Brae River then hired a taxi driver who took us on a tour all over the island - even went to pick up his daughter at school and took us up into the hills to see the house he was building, with fabulous views of the harbor. His family had been on the island for generations so he gave us tons of information on the history of Jamaica. Others we talked to who just stayed in town hated Montego Bay but I think the trick to many ports is to get out of town and see the countryside. It gives you a much better perspective than the often dirty and crowded port area.

We LOVE Jamaica!

We just did Montego Bay on our Splendour cruise at the end of April. We took the shuttle to town for shopping and hated it. Shopping at the pier was better and less hassle. We then took the 4X4 tour in the afternoon and had a blast. The guide was very friendly and talkative about his culture etc... The ride was fantastic and the swimming hole was refreshing.

We'd take the tour again in a heartbeat, but forget town!

Ditto! Don't go into town! The locals will harass you to buy some junk from them and will not take no for an answer. Some will tell you that they need money for food, while a cursory examination yields that they are overweight. I agree; take a tour out of town.
