Montego Bay

After reading some different opinions on Montego Bay, is it even worth getting off the boat. It sounds like it is a cesspool.

Do you like the beach? You can take a cab for about $60 round trip to a private beach where no one can get in to sell you anything. It is called Rose Hall Beach Club. Not to be confused with the excursion to Rose Hall Great House. It cost $8 per person to get in. There is shade, tables, chairs, floats and restrooms. No charge for anything except food which is a bit expensive. We ate a big breakfast then when back to the ship for a late lunch.

Mo Bay and Jamaica are beautiful places. Unfortunately it take a little while to learn the ticks to have a great port stop. First the city is very large compared to other Caribbean towns. The people are extremely poor and just trying to feed their families. It is kinda' like a piece of meat dropped in the water with a school of piranha?s.

The way to prevent this is to hire a cabby to go with you. A very good one is Percival Thompson. Telephone # (876) 952-1442. License # PP1393. He has a nice air-conditioned VW mini-bus, speaks very good English, and is an extremely nice person. He will take you where you want to go and will keep the beggars and pushy merchants away from you. His Price for 4 people total for 8 hours is $ 120.00 with unlimited mileage where every you want to go including Ocho Rios and Dunn's River Falls. That's only $ 30.00 per person for 8 hours. Of course his rates are much less for just around Mo Bay.

After my first visit to Mo Bay I had made up my mind I would NEVER go back ~~!!~~ What a mistake, Jamaica is a very beautiful place, and a drive into the country side to meet the people is a wonderful experience. Just remember to pay about 1/4 of the asking price or LESS !!

The food is excellent, and the people wonderful.....

Joebat 1 is absolutely correct. Jamica is a beautiful island. Sometimes it seems that you are being hasseled to buy something but the people are just trying to make a living. Just be nice, polite and show them the respect they deserve.

Many times the people who do the complaining about how terrible a place is didn't bother to get out and do something, didn't bother to learn something about where they were going , etc. Get out and about--see the countryside. you will enjoy.

We did a 4x4 excursion in MoBay in early May and had a grand time. It's offered via the cruise line, but we felt it was worth every penny. My hubby had such a grand time he even tipped the driver an extra $20.

We were a small group of six in our vehicle (they only hold eight max.) and they drove us through the outskirts of town, through the orange orchards, past very old plantations with stops at an old church where we went inside, another stop for cold drinks and another one at a swimming hole. Fantastic but very bumpy ride. Our guide Richard was very knowledgeable and willing to share and our guide at the swimming hole, Marlon was very pleasant. He even helped me climb up a rushing waterfall (straight up, not like Dunn's River) and that was no small feat!

I'd recommend this tour to anyone and believe me I'm not really keen on ship sponsored trips, but this one was great!!

We LOVE Montego Bay and Jamaica. As others have said, the trick is to get outside of the dock area, which can be a very depressing. On our last trip, we hired a taxi driver for the day (negotiate the rate BEFORE you start out). We went rafting on the Martha Brae River (a GREAT excursion-I highly recommend it!) and Barry, our taxi driver, was waiting when we were finished. He then proceeded to take us on a tour all over the island, telling us stories that the average tourist would never hear. He is a native of the island and very proud of it and has fantastic stories to tell about the history and such. He took us to pick up his daughter at school then took us to the home he was building for a bite to eat and to meet the rest of his family. They were so gracious and happy to have us visit them and the views of the port area from his homesite on a hillside were spectacular. We have always found the majority of people in Jamaica to be very kind and very anxious to leave you with a good impression of their homeland, as they count on tourists for their livelihood.

Whatever you do, be sure to get out and see the island and don't just stay in the port area. Jamaica is a beautiful place and what you see when you get off the ship is not a fair representation of what it has to offer.
