Montezuma’s Revenge in Cozumel?

When I went to Mexico, we had to be very wary of what we ate and drank because of the bacteria is something we are not accustomed. Is it the same on Cozumel? I know that I ingested bad food a Xcaret a few years ago. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks...

Joe.

It is not necessarily that the water is "bad," it is that your body is unaccustom to the water in that area. You can have Montezuma's revenge going from city to city in the US for this reason. All drinking water has some stuff in it.

With that said, yes, I'd be careful in Cozumel because the water there has more "stuff" in it than you are used to. Unless the water used in the restaurant/hotel/resort is bottled or filtered at the site I wouldn't eat veggies washed in water (lettuce), fruit that isn't peeled or ice cubes.

Be sure to take some Imodium AD with you :)

Okay, we did the DANGEROUS stuff, in Cozumel, we ate at both fat tuesdays and the bar across the street (both on the ocean). we ate salsa, drank the infamous 'Ritas and had a few more, then we went to playa da sol, or what ever they call it and drank BEER ON TAP!!!

Noooo problem for us. Mind you all this was on "cruise ship" gatherings where an ooutbreak would cause some serious re thinking of port choices for the 6 plus cruise lines that dock there.... it's just like Disney.... but there are no guarentees that disney won't have contaminated food either... it's the same financial disaster for both.

ps... I do take the Immodium just in case... but 2 cruises there may give me a false sense of security... the salsa was worth it !!!

Most of the restuarants have bottled or filtered water they use to cook/clean with.....
So it should be safe.

It's the small places I'd be afraid of....When we were in Majahual (costa Maya) we ordered sodas and they brought them in a can and with a glass of ice. We told them to take the ice back and we drank out of the can. It's just better be safe then sorry later on!

Maybe I've been really lucky, but I've eaten in a ton of places in Cozumel - large, small, homes of locals - and never have had a problem. I do stick to bottled water though. I've had some great meals and fantastic salsa from some little taco stands in town. My husband claims it's the Don Julio I drink that keeps me safe... I guess I'll keep drinking it since it is working so far!

My suggestion is: the next time you cruise, get a prescription from your doctor for an antibiotic like Amoxicillin and take it for 7-10 days before you leave on your cruise. Also get a prescription for Lomotil just in case you do get diarrhea. This will work better than the over the counter stuff like Immodium. Also drink only bottled water on your cruise.
I have IBS and this works for me.

"It is not necessarily that the water is "bad," it is that your body is unaccustom to the water in that area." DebraK, it doesn't appear as though you read the 1st sentence of joej's original post.

We talked to some folks at Paradise Beach about this subject. They said nobody on the island drinks the water, not even the people who live there. Everyone uses bottled water. This would not encourage me to drink it. He assured me, however, that their establishment (and I'm sure most others) uses only bottled water and ice made of bottled water. I didn't drink anything but a canned pop and water from the ship, so I can't testify, but I thought it was good to know.
