Montigo bay

We are cruising the Caribbean in April. 2 adults/2 boys 7+12. We have stops in Montigo Bay, Aruba, Curaco and 2 others. Are there any must do shore excursions on these stops? We don't like long bus rides. Is it easy (safe) to get around on your own in Montigo Bay? We like to book our own shore excursions when possible. Any help would be appreciated- Mimi

Mimi, Montego Bay is a very poor area where people will try to sell you things and find it hard to take no for an answer. We rented a taxi and went to Rose Hall Beach Club. This is a private beach where we were almost alone and no one bothered us. There is food and restrooms available. I don't remember the cost of the taxi. It is not a long drive but, it is slow because there is a lot of traffic and there is livestock in the streets. It was about $30 round trip. There was a $8 per adult and $6 per child fee at the beach. Shade was plentiful and chairs and floats were included. This was in 2001. Darlene

we arranged for a private tour guide who was absolutely fabulous - we also went to mayfield falls which was incredible.

Mimi, we were in Montego Bay in 2001 (Carnival Inspiration). Took a cab over to Doctor's Cove Beach. Very reasonable fee (maybe $3 pp); chair & umbrella rental available. Access to cold drinks & snacks. Very clean, very friendly beach. Fresh water showers (indoor & outdoor) and restroom facilities.

Left the beach and headed to Margaritaville for the best frozen fruit concoctions! 110 ft. water slide was awesome, as well as the water trampolines. Cabbies literally swarm as you exit the restaurant's door, waiting to take you back to your ship.

As previous posters mentioned, the area is very poor. Hustlers everywhere trying to sell you anything and everything! Good t-shirt shops along the walk from beach to Margaritaville; good deals, but be sure to comparison shop.

Have a great time!

I was wondering about my day in Montigo Bay in May. The ship's tours really didn't appeal to me. Looking for some good advice from a experienced cruiser.........

Is Margaritaville a great place for lunch and drinks? How are the prices? Is it walking distance from Doctor's Cove Beach? What about shopping? or should I save all my shopping for Cozumel. I heard they had great prices on silver and leather!

Thanks!
