ROME, 10 JUNE 2008 - MSC Cruises today received an award from the Italian National Consortium for Recuperating and Recycling Aluminium Packaging (CiAI)* for safeguarding the environment through its shipboard recycling programme.

The award was given this year to three different Italian municipalities that distinguish themselves by recycling and promoting environmental issues as they collect recycled material.

The fourth prize goes to MSC Cruises after a year's worth of collecting on board the fleet. The agreement with CiAl started in the spring of 2007 for collecting large quantities of aluminium that had not been simply thrown away between May and December 2007. The company collected 10,000 kg of aluminium, which was subsequently picked up in the port of Genoa.

Drink cans, aluminium foil, boxes, and aluminium packing were all collected and given to CiAl, which recycles this material for re-use in new items such as household goods, furnishings, elements used in residential construction and transportation, plus lots more.

MSC Cruises has always been mindful of this issue and maintains sustainable programmes to safeguard the environment. The newest addition to the fleet, MSC Fantasia, will be christened in Naples on 18 December and sister ship MSC Splendida will join the fleet in June 2009. Each will have the most innovative environmentally-friendly programmes and systems in place, ranging from energy savings to treatment for waste water.

MSC Cruises was one of the first cruise companies to adhere to the Venice Blue Flag agreement that governs ships entering the Venice lagoon. It covers ships using diesel oils and aims to reduce their sulphur emissions. The company has received the most prestigious environmental certificates from recognised national and international bodies.
