Venice and MSC Cruises have taken another big step closer with "Friends of Venice" - a club born to unite all the supporters of the city who wish to contribute to its image and protect its heritage.

MSC Cruises has always been very strong in this region, with 48 calls in 2006 by MSC Musica and MSC Armonia, for a total of 270,000 passengers. When MSC Musica's sister ship - MSC Orchestra - joins the fleet she will start her maiden cruise out of Venice on 2 June 2007. She will then be joined by MSC Armonia and the two ships will call into Venice 59 times bringing 330,000 passengers. According to a Venice Passenger Terminal estimate, every passenger arriving or departing from the city spends on average 107 euros. These two ships alone should generate revenues of more than 35 million euros for the city.

MSC Cruises will sponsor the most important events from the Venice Carnival, with the Best Mask Competition that takes place in St Mark's Square, to the Historical Regatta, which takes place in September 2007.

"Venice offers an incredible synthesis of art, culture, show and tradition," says Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises. "This is an ongoing relationship and collaboration, begun in 2000 and reinforced by the christening of our flagship MSC Musica against the splendid background of Riva Sette Martiri. The co-operation we get from the entire city shows the appreciation that Venice has for our cruise programme. We are privileged to participate in the ‘Friends of Venice' club, the culmination of a plan for economic and cultural links which offers a perfect synergy between MSC Cruises and the City of Venice."

"MSC Cruises and Venice represent a successful relationship," says Domenico Pellegrino, General Manager MSC Crociere. "Venice welcomes many cruise passengers and is also a transit port of call, not least a pre- and post-cruise destination for those with time to enjoy the magical atmosphere of the lagoon city. Venice represents an entrepreneurial opportunity for MSC Cruises and a promising area of development. We are including Venice as part of our ocean voyages programme from South America. We are also looking to develop Venice into a year-round cruise operation."

To strengthen the communication, a marketing plan has been created with the slogan "MSC Cruises - partner of the City of Venice". MSC Club members worldwide will be told of the partnership through a newsletter. The next edition of the in-house magazine, and all the communication activities throughout 2007, will feature this. This information will also be available on the web site for the City of Venice, the Carnival, and the Club of the Friends of Venice, as well as on the international web site of MSC Cruises. In addition, a reprint of the MSC Cruises' 2007 brochure will be published highlighting this initiative.

Over and above this activity, promotional material will also be created along with a video of the city of Venice, which will be played onboard MSC Cruises.
