MSC Cruises Has Just Posted the Following:
For 2008 MSC Cruises has renewed its membership with the Friends of Venice Association that commemorates contributions made by companies to promote the city and enhance its image. Following on from 2007, MSC Cruises will once again sponsor the annual Carnival and the Historic Regatta and for the first time also sponsor the New Year Event for 2008/2009.
"MSC Cruises is renewing its ties with the Friends of Venice,"- said Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises. "We are delighted with our collaboration with this amazing city in a synergy that has many aspects, from cultural to economic. In conjunction with the Council of Venice and the Venice Passenger Terminal, we are emphasising the need to safeguard the environment - an issue which is close to our heart. We are once again showing our commitment to this city as we will use it as a home port for our newest ship, MSC Poesia, due to be christened in April 2008. In so doing we will increase further our passenger visits to the City of Venice."
The collaboration between MSC Cruises and Venice will occur on various levels as the company has received from the city's Mayor, Massimo Cacciari, the Venice Blue Flag. This award recognises MSC Cruises's efforts in safeguarding the environment. This voluntary agreement, underwritten by MSC Cruises, significantly reduces carbon emissions as company ships transit through the Venice lagoon from the Lido to the Maritime Station.
Also important is the collaboration between MSC Cruises and the Passenger Terminal of Venice, which recently reached an important milestone: on 1 December 2007 the Passenger Terminal saw its millionth passenger transit the Maritime Station, embarking on MSC Armonia for the transatlantic crossing to Brazil.
MSC Poesia, the newest addition to the fleet, will join MSC Musica, MSC Opera and MSC Sinfonia in making a total of 71 visits to the city during 2008. From March to November, the company is looking at carrying more than 420,000 passengers through Venice.
